A good idea on slow days?

I like to watch detailer's videos on YouTube when they talk about their business. This guy might not yet be an Autopian, or care to be one, but he's out there hustlin and working hard to make it in this industry. I apologize for the language, but it's YouTube. Super ghetto, but he's not sitting at home waiting for the phone to ring! Lesson one in marketing, people must see you to know you exist!

I thought about doing this since I do have a car wash mat and do strictly rinseless. I stay away from smaller details as much as possible, but if you have nothing booked, can't be a bad idea!? I wouldn't do extensive details, but how hard is a Wash and Wax or Clay and Polish? I drive by a few spots with openings that I'm always thinking...that'd be a good location. I might do this someday...

Years ago I tried that same type set up out. I had a contract with a very large business park that only allowed me in it. Setting up and tearing down everything is a real pain. If you're not set up by 6am and staying until 6~8pm, it's a waste of time. I think the best I billed in a place like that was $500'ish in a day. Some days I would show up with help and not get a single job. In the end it wasn't worth it for me.

I will say that it is better than doing nothing though. As a business owner, if you're slow you need to hustle and make work happen. Here is the question everyone needs to ask themselves though. Where is my effort best invested? Some folks thrive in those type of locations and others thrive in other venues. I am one of the "other venues" types.

I would get much better results just driving my truck and trailer around my local towns for brand recognition. That plus hanging door hangers, sending letters out to clients, updating my website and facebook, creating youtube videos, and so on. I even have a couple of local small dealership that will basically send me work at will.

I feel like there are much better things to do than sit around and wait for someone to pull up to get their car washed. If that works for you however, go for it! Worst thing you can do is try it for a few days and see what happens. I would at least get a nice sign, make the setup look more professional, however.

I actually thought about doing it while working on something like my website, facebook, youtube...or homework, haha. I don't think many steady detailers would do this, but for those just starting out, it's a good way to get your feet wet and a good lesson... Just because you build it, doesn't mean they'll come. Gotta connect with people!!
