A black G35 illustrates the importance of proper washing.

Hey guys. This is an '05 black Infiniti G35. The paint was probably in the worst condition I'd seen since moving to Toronto. The owner is a very nice guy but hadn't really put a ton of thought into car care until recently. He mentioned that he has it washed at "a local place" which I think means some guys with dirty rags. The scratches on the hood, roof, rear decklid and upper door panels were unbelievable for a one year old car.

Process:

Menzerna PG/yellow @ 1500rpm

Optimum OHC/orange @ 1500 rpm

Menzerna IP/orange via PC

Menzerna FPII/white via PC

Prime Strong/white via PC

Acrylic Jett/grey via PC

Souveran by hand

Poorboys NL on all the trimmings

End result was good. Marring was almost completely removed except on the hood which still had some deep long scratches from washing. The owner is now very interested in a proper was procedure. :2thumbs:

Yes, now that you made his car look like new again, I bet he is interested in proper wash procedure. Excellent work! :bigups

Looks great!

Even though I can't believe you let your PC pad touch the floor. ;)

Hah! I was done at that point. When I finished the last panel I was so tired I dropped the PC and ran for water. It was 104F that day!

Cheers guys.

Good grief Picus, 5 polishing steps?! At least the end result was worth it.

How long did the entire process take? I tried to sneak in a quick pass of PO85RD this weekend, but the heat and humidity made it unbearable...especially since my driveway has nearly no shade.

I know, it totally needed it though, and of course the Prime is a little redundant after FPII, I used it as a base for the AJ. I originally tried OCH on an orange first but the results were mediocre, so I stepped up to PG/Yellow. Then after OHC I tried FPII/white but it wasn't finishing down perfectly so I did IP/orange via PC first. G35 paint is finicky and this was in rough shape. Here's a picture of some of the haze I dealt with after the rotary... on most cars I can clean up with the rotary but not this one:

And here it is after IP/orange (still a little hazy, you can see why I used FPII after it)

and after fpii

So it was a slow process. Total time for exterior only was ~7 hours.

Pics like these give me a real pain-then-joy experience!

Am I normal? hehe

:getdown

Normal in relation to the rest of us? Probably. Normal in relation to the world? Absolutely not! :D

That pretty much describes why I detail cars. I feel pain when I see them so abused, and the sense of joy/pride/happiness when they're done is really satisfying!

Very nice work, GREAT results !! Is Infiniti paint quality just really bad / weak, or is it just owner abuse / neglect ? There was another post a few days ago about an Infiniti M45 with either poor quality paint, or severly abused. Just wondering about their paint quality, since 2 similar posts in a few days. This site is so GREAT !!! :usa

Both. Infiniti paint marrs very easily, but it can be kept in much better shape than this if washed and dried properly. The real pain about it (imo) is that it's tough to remove marring even though it's soft paint, and it likes to haze *a lot*. I find Honda paint is also very soft, but it polishes really well... Infiniti paint is very perplexing stuff.

Amazing job! I absolutely love the G35 Coupe and that black is just insane. Excellent work on an awesome car. I can't believe someone could let such a machine get in that shape.
