A 12 year old, 12 second Galant Sleeper detailed

Do I have your attention yet :D ?

I detailed today for a fellow Autopian (rotaryb). He found me through Autopia and had me come out to give the car a good claying/polishing.

The car is a 1992 Mitsubishi Galant VR-4. It's a very rare AWD turbo car in which he has invested PLENTY of engine and other work into. I forget exactly what it has done but I caught "17 lbs of boost" and "low 12 second times in the 1/4". I'll let him chime in for the performance mod list ;).

Anyways, the car is 12 years old. Very nice shape might I add. No clearcoat failure or oxidation. He washes once or more a week and NXT's fairly frequently (about once a week). The bad parts were the horizontal sufaces. Lots of light scratching and etching...a common occurence over time. They were also quite imbedded with soot. After all was said and done, I'd say the appearance improved about 90%. I told him I didn't want to get too agressive, reason being the paint was quite old and I had a feeling the clear was quite thin. My final processes were:

-QEW

-Poorboy's Clay with QEW lube

-Meguiar's #80 Speed Glaze and LC Cutting Pad via rotary @ 1500rpm on all horizontal surfaces

-Menzerna MicroPolish and LC Polishing Pad via rotary @ 1500 rpm

-Zaino Z5 by hand

-Poorboy's Pro Polish on lighting, exhaust, and rims (followed by Z5)

-Hyper Dressing 2:1 on tires

Before Polishing...notice the etching and light scratching

GORGEOUS work Sean!! :xyxthumbs :xyxthumbs

Those cars were waaaay ahead of their time. With the success of the WRX and Mitsu's EVO...they are nothing more than what the Galant VR-4's were....boosted AWD sedans!!

Kudos to Sean for the excellent work! Though I've always been anal about keeping my cars clean in and out, I'm a relatively new Autopian and I'm learning alot about more serious products and processes.

Sean did a great job of cleaning up the finish and removing lots of light scratching and embedded dirt. As expected, the Z5 produced terrific gloss and brought out the metallic in the paint at the expense of depth. I opted for the zaino LSP for a bit more protection in the coming winter months and I'll keep it maintained with Mother's pure caranuba until spring as my usual dose of NXT will strip the Zaino.

So, the Galant VR4 is my daily beater and I've got an RX-7 as my weekend sports car. The VR4 has the following mods:

Engine/Drivetrain

-Fresh rebuild (13K now) w/ removed balance shafts

-18G, 2.5 inch turbo back exhaust and downpipe, HKS intake

-walbro 255, 660cc injectors, aeromotive FPR and fuel filter, braided fuel lines and AN fittings.

-JDM Galant Evolution FMIC, custom made 2.25 inch IC piping

-ACT 2600 clutch, JUN chromoly flywheel, Stainless clutch line, JDM GVR4 tranny (shorter gears).

Electronics

-HKS VPC, EVC 4, Twin power ignition, Apexi SAFC, GReddy boost/EGT gauges .

Suspension

-H&R springs, KYB struts, GREX front strut brace, white line rear strut brace, whiteline sway bars, polyurethane bushings throughout, front camber adjusters

-17X7 racing hart C5 replicas, 225/45/17 pirelli P-zero asymetrico, KVR cross drilled rotors, hawk pads, stainless brake lines

-6000k HID kit

I gave sean a quick ride today but I'm down about 100hp as I'm only running 17 psi (should be at around 22 psi) and I need to do some more tuning. The knock sensor has been picking up a resonance somewhere for the past couple of weeks and retarding the timing up top. I've got to check for any loose bolts around the knock sensor or replace the sensor itself and re-tune. My last track visit netted 12.28 @ 114mph

 car! I hardly even see them around anymore...not like they were all the popular even when new though. Definitely make good sleepers. I think Turbo or SCC had one as a project car and they got over 400 hp out of it. Must be a blast blowing the doors off unsuspecting F-Bird, Camaros and Mustangs.

Great job on the detail, Sean, the paint looks brand new!

Turbo had a project GVR4...once back in proper order w/ the timing, I should be in the range of 350-400 whp. Mitsu only made the car to legalize it for rally racing as each contender had to be built from a stock car and it's basic components. It's pretty much a 1G eclipse AWD drivetrain in a Galant. Only 3000 were brought to the US, 2000 in 1991 and 1000 in 1992. Each came with a numbered plaque on the dash and a numbered keychain...you're looking @ #92/1000 :)

yeah, i fugured it would pretty much be a turbo 3000GT drivetrain, right?

looks good

The Galant VR4 is basically an eclipse GSX with slightly different gears/cams. The GVR4 is also blessed with all wheel steering (yep, a rack in the rear, not just a pair of funky bushings) though the hardcore guys usually remove it in lieu of a 4 bolt LSD rear.

Excellent detail Sean! There is a unique "glow" to your details and I think it comes from using Menzerna. I don't see that kind of shine anywhere else. I love seeing it.

Look at the 4th & 5th after picture.

I believe that color is called Belize Green. Someone over on NASIOC's friend has one and brought it around to our old meet.

The owner actually called me last night to detail his daily driver before the real winter hits...

Not a huge fan of any green colored car, but it did turn out beautiful. . .

Belize green is right...I actually told Sean the very same thing, I'm not a fan of green cars either but I DO love this color. It's a green/gray metallic mix with hints of blue as well. IMHO, belize green and kensington gray were the nicest colors for the GVR4. Belize green is and white are the most common colors for all 3000 USA cars. Kensington gray is likely the rarest GVR4 shade.

I wonder why those links I posted of my RX-7 won't show up in the post, I used the
