800rpm's and holograms

Without the spinning, the pad and product will do nothing. To say that the holograms are not caused by the spinning action is not entirely correct. Sure, you can use an old wool pad and a very abrasive compound and get much more paint damage or you can use a soft finishing foam and limit the amount of holograms but the spinning is what causes the holograms. That is why Fuzz recommended the dual action PC. Finishing and polishing with the dual action polisher is the perfect solution to holograms or buffer swirls.

Here are a few questions the detailer should ask themselves...

Why try finessing swirls and holograms out of paint with more heat and cutting than you have too? Why use a machine that, in the wrong hands, can cause damage. Why not use a machine that is much more idiot proof and can polish paint without the risk of burning through or leaving behind holograms and swirls?

The rotary polisher has it's place, but the PC dual action polisher is very popular for a very good reason.

thanks dwayne. very insightful. never thought about it that way.

but how do detailers like gr stilez finsih with the rotory with almost perfect results and i can't get it down. i mean i practice all the time. and at the end just quit and finish with the pc.

ill stick with the pc until then

Like I said before it depends on the car (paint) sometimes.
Do enough cars with a finishing pad and FPII...sometimes there are holograms, sometimes not. Don't be so quick to assume your skills are to blame.

I often finish with the PC, why worry about holograms if you can finish with the PC?

Some C.C. are jsut harder than others. Audi and ford comes to mind, Audi being the harder of the two. That plays a factor in if you can get a swirl (hologram free finish or not). But as Wifehates car said why chance it, just finish up with the PC if for nothing else piece of mind the job is done correctly and uniformly.

I think GSR has a ton more experience than most people on this board at using rotary, not some of the old pros but most of the people on here. He does it professionally and does good work. With time we can all be that good, we just have to work at it and think at it.

If we all use rotory then finish it off with the PC, we will never learn and get good at the rotory. Of course it is good to get the job done right with a PC.

IF you want a perfect non hologram finish try

ultrafina a product from 3M its a new product... its made my life alot easier..

if you wanna talk to about how we use it you can call the shop 701.365.0010

Compounding, heavy to moderate swirls i like the rotory... i really like to mix the optimum polish with poorboys 2.5, which cuts well then polishes, this combo is slow to break down cleans and shines the paint and removes moderate to heavy swirls, i generally use a light to moderate/heavy cut pad (do you guys notice after a few minutes of use the pads get softer?) anyway, i found in learning experiences with the rotory i work the product with light to moderate pressure, as the product breaks down i let up and very very lightly(just using the weight of the rotory) lightly finish working the product... by just breakdown the product at 1500 rpm will ALWAYS LEAVE SWIRLS......YOU MUST FINISH VERY VERY LIGHTLY VERY LIGHT PRESSURE ON THE ROTORY, THINK ABOUT IT : you set the rotory on 1500 and work out the heavy swirls, heavy swirls are gone, now you have light ones, so LIGHTLY go over the holograms with rotory again.......... i used to have a problem with holograms, its half technique and half product try the OPTIMUM POLISH COMPOUND, very good product it will peacefully remove heavy to light hologram swirls, and you dont need to use a dual action, dont get me wrong i still use my da to wax (and thats it) practice practice practice.....if that guy from england can do a perfect detail so can you :)
good luck

Does that mean we should never learn how to use the rotory for final touch. It sound like the rotory is only for a certain purpose. You are right to a certain point.
