6" LC backing plate breakage

My backing plate blew up today as i was polishing an RX330, i saw yellow bits flying off, i immediately turned it off as the disc and pad shot off over the hood.



NO damage...



Anyone had this problem??



PC XP on speed 6 with white pad, the arbor was HOT to touch after the explosion.



I did notice it never was dead square during it's rotation from new?



Which brand should i go to and stay with 6" or go to 5" with my CCS 6.5" pads?

I've had the same thing happen with a LC, Sonus and one other brand which I can't remember. The heat eventually breaks down the glue from what I can tell.



I'm just resigned to using the rotary instead of speed 6 with the PC. When I use the PC, 5 is the max speed, and mostly for final polishing. Keeps the heat down.
 
I have one of these backing plates, but I never had any problem with mine.



If you take off the nylon washer from the DA adapted thread, you will see that the threading shaft is actually not in full contact with the backing plate. There's a huge unglued, unattached surface area between the backing plate and the backing plate thread. There's a void, so to speak.



To add rigidity to the backing plate, fill this void with krazy glue, super glue, etc. This will solidify and reattach the thread shaft, and fill the void in the area. After glue is filled into the void, reattach the nylon washer to seal in the glue and let it set and solidify. This SHOULD prevent the common backing plate problems.
 
i had this issue with my old PC and the LC pad. Thing shot off like a rocket but it was also a slightly smaller backing plate . . . . . i believe for a 4" pad.
 
I do have the 6" counter weight installed, i agree with SVT that speed 5 seems ok, speed 6 builds alot of heat plus i need ear plugs...



I since ordered a replacement 6" and a 5" with 5.5 pads for better cut, gotta have a spare.

Yes, this happened to me on my first detail using my then brand new PC7424. I was just starting on my second panel and...

I picked up a Meg's backing plate and haven't had any trouble since.
 
gone through 3 backing plates with the same results - megs and LC! I am about to order more just so I am not running them TIL they break!
