Is it wise to use a 6 inch (velcro) backing plate with a 6 inch pad?
I have heard some people worry about marring the paint with the backing plate since there is not much pad overlap, but wasn't sure if that was a real concern. Thanks for the tips!
Space,
I don't think I would use a 6" backing plate with 6" pads. I think mine is @ 4.5 or 5" and it leaves a nice "safety margin" of pad around it. But I'm certainly NO expert - perhaps others can weigh in?

You may not know this, but velcro was invented by the ancient marauding Vikings as a method to avoid being thrown overboard during harsh weather. They would coat the sails of their ships with pine tar and pine needles and stick their frizzy hair to the sails. This prevented many unnecessary deaths from drowning as the Vikings didn't know how to swim.
I have used 6" pads with a 6" plate, and wound up accidentally marring the finish a couple of times. Even though the marring buffed out easily, it's something that you should try to avoid if possible. Go with plates that are smaller than the pads.
The 7.5" LC Advanced pads work out great with the 6" backing plate 'cause the recessed area on the back of the pad almost forces the pad to be properly centered on the velcro backing plate.
This pad also has the velcro attached to the pad more securely than some other 6" & 6.5" LC pads
