5 Hours of Escape

My name is Mike
A coworker buddy of mine asked if I could remove a couple of paint transfers and generally clean up his daily driver, a black 2011 Ford Escape. The catch was I would only have 5 hours. He obviously didn't want a full correction. The time limit did hamper the pictures. You'll have to use your imagination on the befores but it should be easy. Picture your typical dirty, swirled black SUV - there are dozens in any parking lot you go in.

Started with the dirt removal, wheels & tires first. The Dupray continues to take the sting out of the water restrictions. In addition, on AGO, B&B Tennessee mentioned using foaming glass cleaner as a gentle wheel cleaner. Combined with steam, the results are spectacular. Zep Orange (4:1) on the tires stripped off whatever mess the previous folks put on them.

(You may have noticed I am not using all premium products on this one. You can't get everything for $100.)

Paint was ONR'ed because my original plan was to do a quick 1-step with Opti G-P-S and I like to keep things in the family. After the dirt and grime was removed, a quick claying with my clay substitute sponge was necessary (ONR lube).

Was making good time to this point - only an hour and a half in - but now the swirls revealed themselves in their full glory. The first test spot (GG6 + LC HT Tangerine + G-P-S) was unsuccessful. Second (GG6 + LC HT Cyan + G-P-S) was a no go as well. So much for my Optimum plan. Third (Metabo + Tangerine + Megs D151) was better so finished off the hood. As I move to a fender, the light was just right to for me to decide that that combo still didn't cut it (literally) - to my satisfaction. Stepped up to GG6 + Megs Cutting MF + D151. That was the magic combination - ~90% correction and a mirror like reflection. The more I use D151, the more I like it for situations like this. About 2.5 hours to get the paint happy again.

The owner came over for the last hour (no pressure to finish on time or anything ;) ). He saw me dress the tires, vacuum the interior - removing cat hair with a pumice stone as I went, steam and dress the vinyl, wipe down the exterior again with DP WAW and top it with Optimum Car Wax. Whew!

He was kind enough to allow me snap the following pics as he drove off.

Yes, for a vehicle of that size, 5 hours really wasn't enough. Maybe if I hadn't had to do the hood twice, I could have gotten to the details. I've been trying to reduce the times associated with a detail (and accompanying cost) while keeping the quality high. I was rather proud of this one. This would have probably taken 10 hours with 2 people last year at this time. But the new (more aggressive) products and better, more efficient techniques have really helped.

Next weekend will be more fun though: a metallic black M5 for full correction and (maybe) coating - no time limit ;).

'course it might have helped that I didn't bring over the young'n for an hour to chat.. the M5 should be a hoot!

Great turnaround! Thanks for sharing. Was the customer grateful or happy with the results, from the sound of the write-up it almost comes across like they were ready to get out of there?

When I first started doing hard corrections, it was quite feasible to spend 20-30 hours on the paint. Everything was done by rotary, 4 inch pads for all of the tight areas, long working times, and multiple steps. Modern products (particularly the advent of M105) have chopped that time in half on most jobs.

Thanks Todd. Yes, he was thrilled. He has texted and called me telling me his wife and daughter were stunned by the results. Granted, he isn't a car guy and didn't know he had swirls in the paint so that has to be tempered a bit.

IMO that is sometimes the best reaction. From the guy that doesn't know why it looks so much better but is so happy with the results. You know it is a genuine reaction. Great job again!

WOW isn't enough to describe the nice work!! :bigups

One very satisfied owner drove away that day......:bigups

Thanks everyone - especially BobbyG. Your recommendation for Megs D151 convinced me to try it and I am really liking it.

How would you like to move to San Diego and work for me?:D

A tempting offer. I moved from SD back to TX 7 years ago after living there for 6 yrs. Loved living there but just got my bonus check yesterday for 50% of what I used to make in SD working for HP in a year - reminded me why I left. Now, if you open up a TX branch.... ;)

You must be terribly home sick then!:surfing

I was mostly kidding because I like working by myself, but thats very impressive you got all that done in 5 hours!!:bigups
