3M PI III MG = which SSR polish?

I was removing swirls on my mom's car with a light-cut (orange) pad on speed 6 with 3M MG and it took me about 30 minutes just to do the hood. I was moving very slow with the PC, to the point where you could hardly tell the machine was moving.

I would like to be able to remove the swirls faster than this, so I am probably going to get one of the Poorboy's SSR products, or maybe one of the new Sonus SFX polishes. I want a heavier polish to deal with swirls. I plan to get a cutting pad for this step too.

Also, if I got a car with even deeper swirling, then it would take forever to do the whole car with the MG.

My uncle has a Mazda Tribute with terrible swirls, and he wants me to remove them in the spring. I want to make sure I have the proper products to do it.

Which SSR product is 3M PI III MG closest to?

Which Sonus SFX product?

Would the MG be adequate on a polishing pad to clean up any marring left behind by the SSR or SFX?

MG isn't really that harsh of an abrasive. On the âہ“unofficialâ€Â abrasive list it is rated a 4 (higher = more abrasive) along with Megâ€â„¢s #80, although I think it removes defects a little better. Here are how the SSRâ€â„¢s are rated:

SSR1 - 3

SSR2 - 5

SSR2.5 â€â€œ 6

SSR3 - 7

Not sure about the new SFX polishes, but Iâ€â„¢d say itâ€â„¢d be close to SFX-2.

If youâ€â„¢re working on nasty defects try something with more bite like 3M PI III RC, DACP, SSR2.5, etc.

SSR2.5 is great with a cutting pad. I might give SSR3 a try since I deal with some cars that are in pretty bad shape in regards with swirls. IMO I would just get SSR2.5 and SSR1. If the vehichle you are doing is reeeaallly bad with "deep" swirls then I would give SSR3 a try.

I was just looking at the SFX line at the Autopia store...

I am considering getting SFX1 and SFX3, along with a cutting pad to use with the SFX1. if I had any marring left behind from the SFX1/cutting pad that was too deep for the SFX3, I could use my polishing pad with the 3M MG.

That would also work if you want to try out the SFX line. SFX1 will have a lot more bite than MG, and from the reviews I've read it seems good at removing defects. You're also correct in being able to fall back with MG on a polish pad if needed.... saves buying SFX2 if you're wanting to save a few $$$$.

Another consideration is buying some 3M PI III RC, that will give you a lot more bite and you already have the MG to follow up with.

Lots of polishes, lots of choices........

is 3M PI III RC similar to 1Z Ultra Polish or SFX1?

I haven't used either 1Z or SFX polishes but from various reviews and ratings I would say they are all in the same ballpark.

I personally like the 3M RC & MG because they don't leave any fillers, are easy to work with, and give good results. I do have some SSR1 and 2.5 on my Christmas list to try in the sun.

Reviews on the SFX so far seem mixed; a couple of users loved it and a couple had problems removing it. I'm sure it is a good product, and just like all the other polishes used here a lot of it boils down to what works best for you and personal preferences.

i just read the reviews for the MG, and it seems like people can remove all but the heaviest swirls with a cutting pad and the MG. If I used a cutting pad rather than a light-cut pad with the PI III MG, it would remove swirls faster right? I'm pretty sure that I'd have to use the MG again with a polishing pad afterward, but that's OK.

It depends on how hard the paint is and how bad the defects are. Using a more aggressive pad is always an option, but remember that MG is not all that aggressive. If I can't do much with MG and an orange pad I'll grab the 3M PI III RC.

If MG and an orange light cutting pad isn't cutting it I would move up to PI III RC on an orange pad. IMO this a better option than stepping up to a cutting pad with MG. Cutting pads are a last resort for me.

OK...One more question.

If was trying to prevent any induced micromarring, could I use the RC on an orange pad with better/faster results than I got with the MG?

Better and faster results, yes. Micromarring (or slight hazing), probably, but not that severe, and a follow-up with MG will take care of it in short order.
