3m perfectit 3000 ultrafina

Read a lot about this polish lately, so I looked into it at the local Napa store. After a bit of searching, they found an item number for it, but would have to get it from another warehouse. Cost was $58.00 plus tax for a quart. Thats a bit expensive compared to menzerna and optimum polishes. Is it that much better, or are you just paying for the 3M name?
 
I get it for $35 a quart from my local paint and body supply shop, but I have an "account" with them. Seems like a few places will sell it mail order for about $40 a quart shipped. Not sure for you guys north of the boarder. Do you have any other autobody supply stores around you?
 
It's great stuff. Look elsewhere pricewise, I paid 38us for my quart.



After using Ultrafina for a while, I tried to go back to P0106FF. The dusting just got me, and I stuck with 3M. It is the nicest working polish that you will find anywhere.
 
Is this product targeting softer paints/finishes? I tried to read up on following that video we saw a month or two ago where the results looked so good.

Tom, I have used ultrafina on at least 10 dars now. From soft black Porsche clear to hard vette clear, it just works!
 
I know many people use it in place of 106ff post correction but can it be used as a true finishing polish, similar to like po85rd?
 
Is the ultrafina you are referring to the same thing as ultrafina se? Im new and trying to learn more about the different kinds of polishes so this is probably a dumb question.

IMO yes. I still have some po85rd, one day time permitting. I will do a side by side.

Yes its the same.
 
Correct me if i am wrong, but There are different lines of 3M products, the OTC ones (geared towards consumers) and the one 'professional line', which is geared towards body shops and such.



The Ultrafina SE we are referring to belongs to the Perfect It 3000 series, a professional line. I usually only see it in a autobody paint store and not in stores like Kragen or Autozone.



I have both Menz 106ff and 3M Ultrafina SE and i tend to use the Ultrafina SE more because of 2 things:



1. UF does not dust as much.

2. UF is not jumpy or grabby as 106ff, in my experience.



UF finishes very nicely and i was able to remove holograms using a flex DA/gray pad combo on a hard Audi clearcoat.
 
I've seen several body shops using 3M. I've tried to search for online vendors but I don't know what product lines they offer for professional detailing + body shops. I will do a bit more scrounging now that I have a product line (perfect-it) but any suggestions on online vendors to purchase 3M detailing supplies is greatly appreciated. One that I found was Jamestown Distributors for building and marine supplies. Not sure how they are on pricing, although I know for 3M you will pay a decent amount no matter where you go.

I am wondering, if you have a body shop that is your friend, would they be able to get 3M to you cheaper ?

Might just be how you worded it, but if you're getting dust from UF you're using it wrong.

After being gone from the board for several months, I was a bit surprised to see that a new product had knocked 106ff from it's (disputed) throne as *the* final polish to use.



I must admit, it was very hard to order the Ultrafina instead of the 106. I just love 106. I have a bunch of finishing polishes collecting dust since I switched.



My Ultrafina arrived yesterday. I've spent hours now "jeweling" the hood of my car. I also received a liter of Menz PO85RD (*not* P085RD 3.02.. the stuff I got is the really fine finishing polish). So today I compared the finish of Ultrafina and the PO85RD.



There's an interesting thread over at detalingworld about a similar comparison a guy did between these two polishes, but he used some sort of electronic glossmeter. According to his results, there was quite a difference between these two polishes, with PO85RD being the champ.



Process was:



SIP (PO85RD 3.02)/white LC foam, whole hood



Ultrafina blue 3M foam, whole hood



Ultrafina red LC foam on 1/2 the hood



PO85RD red LC foam on the other half



There was some difference. Not alot, but some. Certainly not enough to be shown by a picture. Enough to warrant an extra jeweling step with the 85RD? Not unless I was getting paid well for the job. The PO85RD did look glossier than the Ultrafina. Given the results of the detailingworld thread, I expected there to be quite a noticeable difference, but that just wasn't the case, at least with my car. Nothing to get excited about, for sure.



There's no doubt that Ultrafina finishes down as well as, if not better than, 106ff in my book, at least. I'm hoping that it will remove holograms and compounding haze as well as 106 does, too. That'll be next week's test. I have several cars coming in for some pretty nasty correction work. What's been everyone's experience so far? Does Ultrafina clean up holograms and compounding artifacts as well as 106FF does?



And I certainly agree with themightytimmah; it really is the nicest working polish you'll find anywhere.

I used my Hitachi rotary/LC White/106FF on my Audi. I was able to remove a lot of swirls and it looked perfect in my garage. When i took it out under the full sun, it was hologrammed pretty badly. I'm pretty sure it was my poor technique that created the holograms.



I was worried that i might introduce more hologramming with the rotary so I used my Flex/LC Gray/Ultrafina. I was able to remove the holograms without any problems.



I hope you get the same results too.
