3m perfect it line.

I Have been using meguiars # 83 # 9 polish for a few years on my stuff that needed polishing. Normally after wet sanding new clear when i paint motorcycle part or

taking fine scratches out of one of my cars. It always got really gummy and left a residue. I finally used up all that polish and being a big 3m fan i just picked up 2 bottles

of the 3m Perfect it, Machine polish and ultra fine. This stuff works so much nicer. Although its over $40 a bottle it seems worth it. I am using a rotary polisher with 8in

foam pads. I also have a 3in air buffer.

My questions

1. How does the 3M compare to other products.

2. What are the recommended buffing pads to use with this. The only pad i had was a Speedy foam yellow. 50ppi, I was going to order the 3m pads are they pretty good?

3. I did not buy the compound stage, It seems its a 3 part system and the Machine poilish is pretty mild. At least on the Volvo. Although its a 3 part system the machine polish

Leaves a great finish from what i can tell on a sliver car i could tell no difference after using the ultra fine. Has anyone review this stuff?

bugman53- 3M has made a lot of different stuff under the "PerfectIt" label, at least four different PerfectIt series lines that I can think of.

I have experience with some PI-II products, which were OK for their time (early-mid '80s or so).

I have a lot of experience with the PI-III line and I still use it from time to time. It's OK in a 1990s sort of way.

I have minimal experience with the PI-3000 line and I didn't like it much, they seemed to take a step backwards when adapting to the VOC regulations.

Sorry I can't be of more help, but I don't think I've used the PI series that you have

I still cant figure it out LOL. 3m's products are hard to decipher. They have a lot of products and little info. This system i think is replacing the PI- 3000 polishes. It seems they want you to wet sand with 1500 then 3000 then use the 3 polishes to bring out a shine. It does say you can skip the ultra fine. I think some of the compounds are from the 3000 line but I'm not sure.

bugman- Ah, so they've some out with newer stuff again! Yeah, it can be hard to tell what they're up to. Wonder where their Ultrafina fits in to all this

I still have a bit of "vintage" pre VOC PI-III RC and MG which were pretty good polishes; they just got replaced with more "modern" products but they perform plenty good. With technology changes in products the collection just grows and grows.

I used those on the RX-7 when prepping it for sale; gave what I considered the right "period-correct level of gloss" when topped with 1Z WPS then 476S. Looked like "a new '84 Mazda" instead of, say... "a new 2011 Mazda" if you get my meaning.

Sure do! I'm contemplating if I should just permanently stick with carnauba on my '89 deVille because I'm sure the pinnacle of its gloss for the paint technology of its time wasn't the same as what some modern LSPs offer now.

Yeah, even on white that car oughta look a certain way, at least IMO.

Hey Guys,

Did you know that 3M is Maguire’s? Take a look at the part number on a bottle of Maguire’s. It just so happens to correspond exactly to the same number of the 3M sku. Yup - 3M is Maguire’s. It's called marketing. And it is huge in this business. Wax is great at $100.00 a tin. Just imagine how much better a $500.00 tin of wax is! It's OK. Just be informed.

3M owns Meguiars, but it's not the same company. And it's no secret either.

Which product in particular are you referring to?

Those ones. The ones that are the re-labeled ones. You know? The same ones that they both sell. That's how they trick you. You know?

:nervous:

Oh, THOSE. Well, yeah everyone knows about those.:chuckle:

Machine Polish is actually a pretty good product. Seems less inclined to goof up compared to something like menzerna, and the finish is actually pretty sharp. The ingredients of 3M's big heavy duty stuff scare me but probably because it dusts so much lol.

Ultrafina is a consistent performer, though can marr ever soooo slightly on the softest of paints(yea, there I said it)
