3M and Meguiars SMR - does it really remove swirls

Does 3M or Meguiars SMR permanently removes swirls or does it minimizes the swirl and fill it.

I have a black car I would like to rid of some minor dealer induced swirls that is all over. Plan to get it perfect....

That's an interesting question. I believe it does a little of both. It rounds off the edged of the swirl as it fills it. That's why they reappear after a few washes. Just my opinion.

that's what I figuered too. SMR tends to reappear on my old car when I used it too.

This time, on the new car, I plan to take the time to PREP it properly. I guess I will use Mez. Final Polish. While a bit more agressive than the *traditional* SMR, I believe it removes the swirls if done properly.

Not all swirls are the same so it stands to reason you cannot use just one product to remove all swirls. A little common sense here, please?

A smart detailer has several products and tools at his disposal in order to tackle most any job imaginable. SMR is only one product of many.

Yeah, what Bret said. :bigups

As a newbie here I had neglected the simple concept that some "swirls" are worse than others. I simply bought 3M SMR and considered my detailing kit "complete" - good grief! :o

If SMR isn't doing the job it's time to step up to a stronger product or process.

Yesterday I Smr'd my hood. There were still some minor swirls left. I then applied P21S GEPC with a white pad and they disappeared. I assume this product filled the remaining swirls.

I agree with Bret. If SMR is not doing it then it's time for rubbing compound.

I am SURE I induce marks when I wash. I don't think it's possible to NOT do that. If it is possible then I am completly baffled. I use the 2 bucket method and a chenelle mit. I lubricate each panel with lots of suds first, I wet the entire car down before that and I don't dry with a towel.

With black it's simplty a constant battle.

whenever I use a product to kill the Swirls the normally dont come back. If they do then I know that they are produced by my washing or drying or my towel or something else. This is why I have a few products to combat against some swirls that are deeper than others.

Well, both. Personally, I use 3M's SMR for dark when I really want to get *rid* of them.

For example, when I first got the car (it's about a month old now), there were some swirls on the passenger's side rear quarter (from dealer, as this was going to be my first wash). So, what I did was spot SMR them in the garage w/ PC. Taking it back into the sun, I noticed that some were gone, and some reduced. I didn't bother to do it again to get it completely perfect.

It WILL actually get rid of them. All you have to do is use a 50/50 mix of water / IPA (rubbing alcohol) to remove fillers and see what's there. Or, if you're using a paint cleaner after SMR, that'll do it, as well.
