3M 39009 question

Ok gang ,.. thinking cap time .. Sal Zaino says its ok to use 3m 39009 ( SMR) directly under Zaino , I am assuming cuz it has no silicones or oils to disrupt the Zaino bonding ..



Keeping this in mind , and knowing it has fillers, and knowing Wolfgang has no cleaners .. Wolfgang should have no problems bonding to a surface prepped with SMR. Right?



Reason I am asking is I have a 04 Black Caddy to do next week and it has minor swirling but the owner doesn't want anything aggressive used and prefers the swirls filled but wants a sealant.



He will also want this maintained by me weekly after the initial detailing.
 
The first time I spoke to Sal, he didn't mention washing or anything after using 3M. He said 3M, then apply Zaino after that. About 2 weeks ago, I emailed him and he told me after using 3M to wash the car with Z7 to make sure all of the oils are off the surface :nixweiss

Now thats interesting .. So Z7 would remove the oils but not the fillers in the 3M ...



So in essence Dawn would do the same
 
Zaino likes to have a surface free of oils, fillers, and waxes to bond properly to the surface. SMR contains oils and fillers, stated in MSDS. It's therefore necessary to lightly wash the surface to remove the oils prior to applying Zaino.

So a wash will remove the oils but not the fillers?
 
This might be a little off topic but if you guys are saying that 3M SMR is just fillers, then what's the point? Wouldn't you want to use something that is going to get rid of whatever defects you are up against? Also, if you use something like SMR, wouldn't a product like AIO just remove it right after??



Maybe like Jesstzn is saying, couldn't we just wipe the area clean with a 50/50 mix and then go right on top of that with Wolfgang, or some other kind of topper?

Oh okay, I see. I forgot about not wanting to use aggressive products. I guess you will just have to glaze the car every time you wash it. I'd say to just go right on top of SMR or IHG with whatever topper you decide to use and see how it works. It's almost your only option......unless you just get rid of those nasty swirls and not tell him!!



Have you ever thought about using 1Z PP and MPP? They aren't very aggressive and you can go right on top of that with your wax. MPP is about as mild as you can get and works great on black. Since it has minor swirling I would say go for the PP instead. I just did a 2002 dark metallic blue BMW 330i that had minor swirling on the hood and trunk and used PP on both with a white pad and it came out great. I didn't have time to use AIO so I just went directly on top of that with P21S as a topper. The owner loved it. It looked like a brand new car.

Too bad you don't have the WG pre cleaner. That product is loaded with fillers. It will hide many imperfections.



As for SMR, I'm sure the WG would work. I'll be frank with you, I like WG but I don't think it's really bonding to anything. Using it over SMR should yield the same results as over the WG pre cleaner.



I'll give more thoughts on my WG experience when I post my formal review.

Update .. I had to buff out my hood anyway so I used the 39009 then Wolfgang after it .. looked like crap .. but NXT looked good over it. NXT didn't pull up the fillers either. I did the Wolfgang NXT side by side .. In the end I used IA and wiped it all off .. then burnished it with FP and Zainoed it .. I will top with Wolfgang as before once I get on a few Zaino layers.
 
I feel that SMR has both solid fillers and some oils. If you use a mild pre-cleaner (designed for pre-sealant) you might be able to get rid of most of the oils, but not the solids. In any case, that's my experience with Platinum Pre-cleaner and UPP. NXT also has some light cleaners in it, so that makes sense too.



I will also mention that when I applied UPP over IHG, it "felt" funny and greasy, so that might have been bad. I can't tell if anything smears coz my car is white.



I imagine you can tell if the solid fillers are still there by, ummm, looking carefully. You can probably tell if the oils are there by rubbing the surface.



I feel that in order to work in the solid fillers, you have to buff until dry, and then some. At that point, I think most of the fillers are pushed into the cracks, and you are only pushing oil around. Hopefully, you won't get marring. You might have to do a second pass to jam in more fillers.



It's probably also a good idea to do multiple coats of the sealant to keep the fillers in.



BTW, I haven't looked at the SMR+UPP test on my car yet coz I haven't washed it recently.
 
Sorry to bring up an old thread but it does not contain oils.



"Note to paint & body shops: 3M Perfect-It Swirl Mark Remover contains no wax or silicones. It is paintable and safe for use in a paint shop environment."



If it contained oils it would not be Paint $ Body shop safe.
