3D Polisher...

So, im going to be purchasing my first polisher soon, and am looking for an inexpensive option.

Ive had some experience with rotary buffing due to my line of work..

The reason why im looking to go inexpensive is becase i would only be using this once a year, if that.

So, has anyone used it?

How does it stack up against the rest?

As far as backing plates, is it a loop and hook type?

Thanks in advance for any insight!

I went to the HD site, and they dont give many specific details about it, so i want to get my research in before i buy anything.

Thanks for the quick reply.

My second choice then would be the griots garage polisher.. I really cant see spending 2-300 on a polisher for the very occasional use.

I bought a 3D Polisher about 6 months ago. It worked once and then stopped working?!?! Anyway, they replaced it for me and have used the new one about a dozen times. Still runs fine. I am not sure that it would hold up to day to day operation though.

Yea, day to day im not really worried about. Id probably use it for sure once this year, and then hopefully not for a few years down the road. Maybe on a few friends cars here and there, but nothing major.

Harbor freight. use a 20% off coupon, you will prolly get it for about 40 bucks.

Ive looked into the harbor freight ones before. Would i be able to use pads like the lakewood etc with one of those?

Ok cool, ive seen that one on their site before.

Is that a rotary, or a dual action?

Ideally id like to not use a rotary, but its not a huge deal to me.

With the level of correction im looking at doing on my car i dont think i really need a rotary, but i have no problem using one.

Ok, thats kind of what i figured. Their not all that descriptive on their site..

I have a couple options open right now.. I might be able to pick up a used rotary, or thinking about going with the griots 6 inch da.

A friend of mine asked me if i could work on his car, which is a black civic si, so im thinking i may just have him buy the polisher for me, and some supplies, and call it even for the detail. We'll see if he agrees to that lol.

If thats the case, then i may just pick up the griots. I think it might be a better way to go for me than a rotary, just because my car has quite a few odd angles, and i dont want to take any chances on burning through clear or paint. No matter how careful anyone is, its not hard to do..

Google search tooltopia and search griots

VERY NICE!! Thanks for the tip!

You might NEED a DA to finish down on that black civic.

Yea, thats kind of what im thinking as well. Im not 100% for sure if he is going to have me do his car as of yet, but the detail shops around by where i live are terrible. I work for a used jeep dealer, and when we get them back from being detailed, i just shake my head and look the other way. They have used multiple detailers, and not one of them i found to be worthwhile.

I am also thinking of buying a polisher. Since I am on a VERY TIGHT BUDGET, I am studying the right combinations of polishers and pads. So far, a budget of $220 is enough to buy a griot's with a lot of pads (combinations of 6.5,5.5 &4).

When I read this thread, the idea of getting a cheap rotary struck me. I am not planning to do serious paint corrections. Is it ok to use a rotary polisher in applying pre-wax cleaners or mild polish by using a slow speed (800 to 1000RPM) and a soft foam finishing pad (red and gray)? I just need a machine to save time in applying pre-wax cleaner, sealants and waxes.

08Sunburst, mate, please excuse me for asking a question in your thread. I just don't want to create a new thread. @mods & admins, please excuse me too.

Not a problem

Im kind of on the fence with buying a cheap rotary. All ive ever used are rotaty polishers, and never on my own personal car, just cars that i work on at work.

I personally dont have a problem using them, but over edges they are a lot more dangerous if you dont know what you are doing and/or not careful. My car has a LOT of corners and edges, so im thinking a da is going to be the way to go for me. I think a da is more practical for every day use.

As for applying waxes and sealants, i guess you could and not have a problem, but its not going to help with nooks and crannies. Still going to have to hand apply some parts. Personally, i like to hand apply wax/sealants, though, the only car i really detail is mine, and when i detail it, i set aside a weekend and take all the time i need.
