I was wondering why you guys recommend the PC buffer so much, what makes it so superior to the other buffers. I had a random orbit buffer that I used on my old car. I kinda messed up the finish. Now, a little older, and a bit wiser, I want to move on up. This time I will practice on another car before taking my chances on my Tundra.

Pics, places to order would be great !:up

Why Orbitals?

1) Many of the benefits of machine polishing without the risks of burning through the paint.

The benefits are:

a) saves time

b) works material more - can produce some friction heat (a good thing)

c) uses less material because it spreads it thinly and evenly

d) makes residue removal easier (with or without machine) because of c) above

e) saves wear and tear on the old bones

f) makes you look like you really know what you're doing

2) Why the Porter Cable? Good form factor, heavy duty, good quality, plenty of power, and well supported by this community.

Is the PC a direct drive type buffer? Or is it Random orbit type?

Carguy, I want to buy it because of reason F.:up

It has enough power to make a good finish great.

It does not however, make neglected finishes sparkling new again. Thats where high speed direct drive buffers come in handy. With training and/or practice, these direct drive buffers can become your best friend. If careless and inexperienced, these buffers can burn paint, and make the car one big swirl mark.

I assume that your truck is in great condition. The PC will make it even better. As in prepare the surface to almost perfection, perfection we all achieve for, but come short of, ever see a 100 on a car that went through Concours events? I doubt it, maybe a few 99.98's and 99.8's, but I doubt someone ever got a 100, there is always that one speck of dirt the judges find.

The Porter Cable is a dual action buffer. Its head moves/oscillates in two directions at once. Visit www.meguiars.com for the power buffing tutorial. Same machine, just re-badged and marked up a few hundred percent.

The machine is very user friendly, after a car, you will get to know the machine. its also a good exercise machine, after hours of use, it tones up the arms, mostly forearms.

There are lots of threads about this, do a search, "Porter Cable", "PC help", "PC techniques".

Most people here go to www.coastaltool.com for the machine, and www.properautocare.com and order the DM-KIT, also get the 6 inch counter weight if you get the DM-KIT because now CMA ships 6 inch backing plates, I use the 5 inch counter weight because I have the 5 inch backing plate.

Happy Detailing,
Jason

The PC is a random orbital. The other style is a direct drive rotary buffer. These are great for bringing back neglected finishes and many other things. But they do create quite a bit of heat. A rotary buffer can cause quite a bit of damage if you are not expierenced how to use it. If you are not paying attention, or make a mistake, you can burn right through the paint with a rotary.

The PC is a very safe machine to use that produces great results, that is why it is very popular.

I think it's the fav around here because people take other people's advice. I never knew anything about picking a buffer. I wanted a fail-safe plan so I went with what people had to say on this fourm and I am quite happy with the product.

Is there better? I am sure there is, maybe a better weight distribution, maybe a better grip, maybe a better feel while operating possibly even better shaped to fit into smaller spaces. I don't know for sure but I do know if you want a buffer you KNOW you'll be happy with, get a Porter Cable. Porter Cable as we all know as known for durable tools.

Correct me if I am wrong people. I think the buffer is more of a time saving tool instead of a quality enhancing tool.

Good way to justify to the wife that more time saved is more time spent with her ;-)

I don't need to worry about all of that, I'm young, single and I only need to convince myself (which is just as dangerous, I found out the bank account is not a bottomless pit DOH). :bounce

First order of buisness: PC is not a buffer, buffer removes paint via friction (correct me...), where as the PC is a polishing machine. Second order of buisness: no the PC is more than a labor savong device, it speards products more evenly, and works in polishes much better allowing you to remove swirls much better than by hand...now a low powered orbital (waxmaster) really is not much more than a labor saving device.

Someone clarify this for me please.

If I gave you 2 random orbital polishing machines and the following was the same:

Diameter head

Speed range

Orbs per minute

Velcro backing head for quick changes

Operator Comfort

Then what makes one better than another?

Not trying to start anything but I have seen bunches of Random Orbitals with prices ranging from $30 to $300.

Can anyone please define what makes one make better than another?

A few simple explanations would be great Since my old Craftsman seems to have bit the big one after 15 years of abuse.

If all the specs are the same and the only difference is maybe how it looks and the manufacturer then I don't see how different it would be, other than reliability.

BTW, I like Klasse random orbital buffers way better then the ones that Zaino makes ;) :D

in this detail was address 15-20 light scratches , leather treatment , engine detail, interior clean/dress , exterior refresh with one step polish.
