30' Boat, 23' too! Long detail! (lots of pictures)

Owner bought the boat from California, I believe it was sitting out for a while before he got it:

With a horrible looking trailer

Luckily the trailer soon went out to get powdercoated

Cutpolished with OHC and PowerGloss, via Rotary

Then I polished with OP, and finished with #26

Even after compounding, there was many deep scratches left:

He also wanted some decals removed.... However I found out, they aren't decals at all... But Painted! He still wanted them gone, so to work I went. Firstly I used a heatgun to heat the top layer of paint, then scraped it off with a plastic scraper. Did this until there was just some residue left:

I then rubbed the remaining with a solvent, until there was nothing left. Then I wetsanded the pinstriping with 2000grit:

For some reason I don't have many after pictures, but here are the wheels:

And here is the second boat, which I one-stepped:

(Those were a few days work!)

In total, I spent somewhere around 26 hours. 2 full 10 hour days, and a few evenings.

Billed for 18 hours for the big boat @ $40/h, and 5.5 hours for the smaller boat.

Total bill was $720 + tax, and $220 + tax.

 Wow, what a huge job! Excellent turnaround too.

I know you had a hard couple of days, boats can be really tough if they aren't well maintained.

Wow that is amazing what you where able to do! I love the polish that came out of the rims. I wounder what they would look like in the water.

Next time when you remove painted on lettering try some E-Z Off oven cleaner.

Just do a little bit at a time. Works great.

just a side note, for those graphics that get painted on Easy Off oven cleaner works great at taking them off. yes oven cleaner. i work at a sign shop and we use it all the time to take off really old graphics that were painted on. just spray it on, let it sit for a few minutes, and then it literally wipes right off.

oh, and great job on the boats!! haha

"...Firstly I used a heatgun to heat the top layer of paint".

Stumpy: Was it gelcoat under the paint? We're you not afraid the base color was also a paint job? Scary...but good for you.

It was gelcoat under, which was the only reason I was able to do what I did.

I heated the lettering just to the point where it would bubble, then I could scrape the whole thing off.

It was sketchy, but I couldn't figure out a better way at the time.

Nice work!!!

I do my Dad's boat every year. The thig is, the white on the deck is getting the faded dirty chalky look. Would OCH and OP work on the white fiberglass? I would be using a PC.

Thanks,

Steve
