I am sure some of you have to be in California. Maybe you can help me. I bought my car a year ago. I was set on the car that I wanted and it just so happend that the only one I could find was in California. So I bought it. Here in Utah they are waaaaay too strict with the tint law I feel. In Texas it doesn't seem to be as large of an issue and obviously not in California either because the car is tinted 20% all the way around and I can't get it to pass inspection here. I am moving back to Dallas or California in 6 months and I don't want to have to take it off just so I can pass the stupid Utah inspection. Does anyone know if 20% will pass in California or Texas? I would imagine it had to in California because that is where it came from. I'm not sure about Texas though.



I love the way it looks with 20%. It is a really high quality tint job too. It is really a clear tint. It doesn't feel like it obstructs my view even at night. Let me know if you guys know the laws there.
 
In califirnia it not legal to tint you front door window at all, you can get away with it most of the time and we dont have inspections for that type of thing, only smog.



I have 30 on 2 of my vehicles and 20 on the other and its been ok so far. All depends on where you go and how the officer feels.



I got pulled over speeding on the way to vegas and he go me for the tint also, and my wife has gotten 2 tickets for the tint. The officer went out of his way to turn around and catch her just to give the tinted window ticket.



Now you can just pay a fine without even removing the tint.

Deltman's data is correct. Tint is illegal on front windows and windshields. However, zillions of cars have tint on the front windows. I sure people have been ticketed, as Delt was, but I believe it is rare. I do not believe in pushing it, however, with too dark a tint (30% being the max on the front windows).
 
In Indiana, you can have your front windows tinted to 30% by the national stores like Pep Boys (I know PB dont tint, but its jsut an example) and it is legal, and the band on the window. If you go any darker, you most likely have to get it done by a local place and you wont get a receipt.

Can I put after-market tinting on the windows of my vehicle?

The main requirements for legal window tinting in California are:


The windshield and front driver's side and passenger's side windows cannot receive any aftermarket tinting.
If the rear window of a vehicle is tinted, the vehicle must have outside rearview mirrors on both sides.

The law prohibits any person from driving any motor vehicle with any object or material placed, displayed, installed, affixed, or applied upon the windshield or side or rear windows, with certain limited exceptions.

However, legislation signed into law effective January 1, 1999, exempts from the above prohibition specified clear, colorless, and transparent material that is installed, affixed, or applied to the front driver and passenger side windows for the specific purpose of reducing ultraviolet rays. If, as, or when this material becomes torn, bubbled or otherwise worn, it must be removed or replaced.

I have received a citation from the CHP in the past for window tinting. Once you receive a citation, you must remove the tinting and have a law enforcement officer from the State of California sign the reverse side of the citation. By the officer signing on the reverse side of the ticket means he has noted the correction made and the driver has complied with the citation. This type of citation is commonly known as a "fix it ticket". The violator then takes the signed off citation to the court where he or she must appear and pay an administrative fee. End of story. If you fail to do the following your registration will be held back by DMV, renewal of your license will be held back by DMV and a bench warrant would be issued for your arrest.
 
That is the best answer I have heard yet! Thanks a lot guy! That makes a difference. I wonder if there is a similar site for the Texas laws...
 
If you guys really value your tint and want to be able to keep it on without getting ticketed/hassled, you can ask an optometrist or ophthamologist friend to write a note (preferable on their letterhead or prescription pad) stating that you have been diagnosed with photopsia (which means you see light flashes or have the sensation of light flickering making your eyes sensitive to light). This letter needs to be reissued on a yearly basis. At least I know that this works in Illinois, where the law states that you may have NO film of any sort (not even clear) on any window immediately to the left or right of the driver.
 
Why the dumb laws any way? I understand not having the deep tint like LIMO black but a little 20% tint or so?

Phenomenal Todd, thanks for the work involved in not only doing that job but putting together that well presented post.

That right there is the pinnacle of the profession gang! Those are the F1 podium drivers of the detailing race. Truly inspirational stuff and gets me to try and achieve 1/10 of those results.

What's cool to see is these guys are using the same equipment, polishes, techniques etc. a lot of us are. Of course technique applied and the subtle nuances of application are light years away from me.

Just another detail for Florida's finest! This is what separates the pro-detailer from the others, I wish every guy thinking there's no difference could read this thread and get a new appreciation for what ya'll do. But - we know most of the motoring public are clueless. I wish there were more folks that cared about their cars the way your customers do. I wish just once, I could be a part of something that cool. At least I can read about it!
