2007 Jet Black BMW 335i (PS I hate Jet Black)

Fantastic work! I'm looking at a 328i coupe for my wife and MAN I am NOT getting Jet Black.

Hoping that Metallic Black is a lot easier!

Just want to chime in that Martin is the man. He spent at least 16 hours on this...and we both hate Jet Black...it just looks so good though. I could not imagine a more professional, or detailed job...prospective customers be warned...Martin will take possession of your car until he thinks it is perfect.

Rey, how are you liking the hardtop cabrio? I've got a 2003 325i and 2003 Z4 2.5i and I've been thinking of selling both and going to a 335i cab - the best of both worlds, right?

Btw, both my cars are black (Jet Black and Sapphire Black, respectively) and I'll be in the "never learn" camp as well. Jet Black just looks too good to resist! :hifive:

First...Sorry Martin for putting you through this.

Second regarding how much I like the car... I absolutely love the car. Drives great, has amazing engine note and honestly I constantly get compliments from all demographics.

Has power everywhere along the curve (nothing like my old S2000)... with top up and at low RPMs it is luxury car. At high RPM's the thing screams...even better with top down.

Not at all, the car is a blast to work on :up

Just not the color...

Did you finally make it past 1200mi? Come on hurry up!

Talk to you soon, hopefully a trip out to you this week!

Jet Black isn't as tough if you maintain it.

The key is to try a few different formulas for compounds and see what works best. The obvious problem is how insanely soft the clear coat is on the JB. So you have to take extra care when working with it.

The true fact is though, JB looks amazing when at 100%. Hands down.

It is nearly impossible to maintain, even using proper wash techniques etc.

A 325 I did, and this was after 3 washes TOPS:

You must be doing something when you are washing then. I take mine through an automatic wash (higher quality than most, in which I have a monthly plan), and after several washes, it's no where near that bad.

I'll admit it'll have some very minor swirling after a few washes, but they are very fine swirls, very hard to see unless you're looking at the clear at a certain angle.

I would double check how you are washing the car, it should not look that bad after a few hand washes. Although I did find that hand washing introduced more scratches than taking it through the automatic wash I use. But that has to do with that specific place and the materials they use.

Dude the clear he is talking about is the "i can't believe it's not butter" clear. Then new jet black bmw's are becoming infamous for having ridiculously soft clear.

Great work on a great car! Black is a maddening challenge.

Just curious, some have mentioned that some colors (especially jet black) is very difficult to take care of because of the clear coat.

This car's clear coat seems to be "buttery soft".

Isn't clear clear?

Why would BMW have different kinds of clear coats?

Other colors that don't mar as easily or are harder might have the same clear coat.

It makes sense since it's a 'clear' coat and would keep costs down at BMW.

Or am I totally wrong?

Dude, you're telling me. I drive a Jet Black E92. I have first hand experience.....

The owner washed it 3 times, and wanted it corrected again :nervous2:

Personally, I think it can be tied to user error. Any chance you know the process of how the owner washes the car?

It's a soft clear coat, yes, but nothing extremely special. It's just more sensitive to abrasive materials and shows the scratches easier. The upside? Less rock chips.

Without a doubt. The owner of the vehicle picture above (not the 335i) had me do a full restoration a little while back, less than 2 months ago. She said since then, she has washed it with her boyfriend 3-4 times. I told them how I would wash the car if it were mine, and they listened but said they did not have the time to go out and buy everything etc.

You are right though, when cleaned correctly, JB is a very nice color.

Sweet! Looks super.

My favorite car color is BLACK and my least favorite car color is BLACK.

I always said there are only really two days that I like my black cars. The day I buy it and the day I sell it. I always swear I won't buy another black car but end up doing it. Right now I'm down to one black car and that is enough :).
