2007 black BMW 330 xi - worst experience so far

Not sure what the big deal is...The swirls on the original pics are dealer installed...and for all we know he could of been having a bad day and decided to wash someones car with a brillo pad...Also, *(not sure if I heard this correctly)*, BMWNA has opted to change the paint in such a way that will reduce the complaints of rocks easily chipping the paint from daily driving. I am led to believe they made the paint softer. I could be wrong.

The big deal is that the paint damages very easily. This sucks for those of us who don't want to spend each weekend polishing their $40k+ vehicle while the neighbor with a Hyundai is out driving his car.

By the way, I hear BMW used Mitsu turbos in the 335...good move for longevity, but this will definitely cause waves in the "if it isn't German, it's crap" BMW community.

Great work Thomas, I've never seen paint like that on such a new vehicle unless it's been abused. I may be doing a new 335 but it's red so I'm not anticipating those kind of problems thank goodness.

Do you think you could have thought of a different term other than what you wrote? Not really appropriate for this kind of forum. We do have members of all backgrounds on here some of them female so how about watching it?

:werd: Well said Ben - - Thomas, great job! Always enjoy your posts!!

I know many things Bence and a few of them pertain to the ladies. ;) I do have to watch out like anyone for the impulses of the dark side.

The problem isn't that this car was in bad shape; it's that it was in bad shape because it has some of the softest factory paint in the industry. Originally folks in this thread (including me), thought this was as a result of a possible re-paint after some shipping damage. Now that I have worked on a separate black e92, 1500 miles away, and it exhibited the same issues this car has (not swirls, but really, really soft paint), I think there might be a problem with black e92s. You have to keep in mind between Thomas and I we've worked on a lot of cars, so for me to say this is the softest factory paint job I've ever worked on is saying something.

As for making the paint softer to avoid stone chips, that could be it. If so, it was a huge mistake on their part. These cars are going to look like an absolutely mess after 2 washes by a non-autopian.

I haven't read a single post at bimmerforums, e90post, or e90fanatics where someone cars that they are mitsu turbos. I think you're generalizing the BMW community anyway. The same could easily be said about Lexus owners.

I had a similar experience with a 996 Porsche twin turbo. My customer purchased this 5 year old car with 600 miles on it and it had never been washed until he bought it home.

Here's a pic of the car after One (1) washing by the customer. I couldn't believe this "new" finish would be in that condition.

After trying several procedures, I went with Meg's #83 and an 8006 pad, followed by AIO and a polish pad, and used Wolfgang Deep Gloss Sealant as my final process. It seems that WDGS put a hard enough finish on the paint to prevent marring. This was done some 3+ months ago and it still looks good.

After re-reading this thread, you may, in fact, have very soft paint. I'd give Wolfgang a shot and see if that solves your problem. I don't think soft paint is exclusive to BMW. I recondition at least 2 late model Bimmers each week for resale and haven't run into this (yet).

Have a GREAT Christmas folks!

Although I am a bit late on this thread, I will chime in too. BMW flat black is one of the worst paints around...period. After having it about 80% swirl free in October, I wash the car(mother's black BMW X3) 3 times since then. There is now significant swirling after just 3 washes. 2 buckets, 2 wash mitts, MF WWs and rinsing the mitt out 3-4 times per panel. Doing correction on one is a nightmare. It marrs when removing polish residue, and the paint is NOT fun to buff. It took me OHC on a cutting pad(via PC) to remove the marring, and that only got 85-90% of it out. For me, this combo has gotten 95%+ correction on most other cars I have done. OP on a polishing pad leaves micro-marring. Simply miserable paint. Other BMWs I have worked on are not nearly as bad. BMW really needs to do something. A few non-Autopian washes and it is all over.

Anyways, car looks great, I actually like the design of the new 3 series coupes.

Bigpoppa - I think we were working on 2 very different type of paint.

Besides the hood, the rest had no swirls (cob webs). Only these very deep scretches. Optimum's poli seal on the pc, with a finishing pad destroyed the paint. In fact, no pc work was successful. The pc created more problems, except for applying the waxes.

I think I will e mail BMW of NA to see what they have to say.

Picus, please continue posting your findings right here. Better to keep all the info together.

Thank you members.

I have another e92 335i jet black tomorrow. I will let you guys know how it goes. FWIW, I did a Monaco Blue 335i e92 today and the paint was fine; soft, but not abnormally soft like the jet black one I did.

I think e-mailing BMW NA is a good idea. It might take some time to get anywhere, but it's a start. At this point I'd say something is definitely up with jet black e92's.

I just finished working on two more 335i e92's, one jet black and one sparkling graphite. The jet black car was just like the one I did a few days ago & the one in this post. The sparkling graphite is much hard; not hard, but about average. I dunno, something is definitely up with e92 jet black.

I have a 2006 BMW 550 in Jet Black and I find the paint (clear coat) to be quite hard. I don't get many swirl marks from washing, but then, I am somewhat meticulous about keeping it clean and protected.

When I do get scratches and swirls, it takes f o r e v e r to polish them out using a PC. I just spent 3 hours polishing out minor swirls on just 2 panels - it took 2 passes each of IP, ZPC, and Jeffs Prime to get it where I liked it.

In contrast, my wife's new Cadillac SRX in Black Raven paint arrived from the dealer complete with minor swirls and spider webs covering the entire car - at no extra cost. All it took to remove those was one pass with ZPC and one pass with Jeffs Prime.

So, yes, something is odd with the 07 BMW black on the 3 series.

Awfully ignorant to assume he was talking about females?

A friend of family has an 07 328i, jet black, same problems. He asked me for help, tips, and I gave them, and he still had major swirling. I then checked it myself and got the same results, just from applying OP w/ finishing pad, lots of marring. I thought I had lost my touch until I saw this thread. :)

op on the rotary works. With the pc, it butchered the paint.

I've worked on two more jet black e92's since I last posted in this thread; same issue. No other color on the e92 has exhibited this behavior for me, and I've now worked on them all.
