2006 Callaway Supernatural Vette (non detail shots)

It's my Dad's car, we drove it a bit today, all I can say is wow!! The acceleration is unreal. He had a 1988 Callaway twin turbo in 88-00, I think it had more torque, but this car seems faster in all aspects, it seems to be very raw when you get on the throttle, but fairly civilized around town.

Victory Red vert with black leather. 490 hp 465 ft/lbs 6 speed auto. 0-60 3.6 1/4 mile 11.6 in the 120's

Here are a few shots of the car. It has not been detailed yet. I'll be doing the detailing, but the dealer scratched up before delivery and tried to fix it. He is bringing it back to have the body shop try to fix the swirls. Then I can have at it. I understand vette paint is hard. I have included pics the swirls the dealer induced before delivery.

What do you guys recommend I use for products on vette paint?

I was thinking this combo- Clay(if needed), PG or IP on swirls, FPII whole car, RMG and Souverean. I'm willing to get anything I need, to make it swirl free, but I will use Souverean as LSP as it's a car that won't see the elements.

Thanks,

Steve

On a brand new Callaway Vette even...what a shame. :angry

It's amazing what some dealerships do to their new cars.

I can't imagine buying a new car for a million bazillion dollars, one as special as yours and having all those blemishes in the paint.

Geeez, if you wanted those blemishes and paint flaws, dad could have bought an old one that had been neglected for 5 or 6 years and the paint would have been in the same condition.

Why not print this message and show the dealer. Maybe the head honchos don't know what the guys with the buffers are really doing.

I just had a second thought. If they did that to a new car, I doubt their competence and skill in repairing it. I wouldn't let them try to fix it in house, I'd just do it myself then I'd know it was done right.

Absolutely not. They'd just redo it and release it in the same condition again. It might look slightly better until the first wash, when the glaze washes off.

Nice car I guess, but I don't get it. Base price for Corvette convertible = $52,190. Supernatural 490HP package = $13,950. Total price $66,140. Why on earth would you buy that when the base price for a Z06 with 505HP from the FACTORY is $65,690? A 90HP/badging upgrade for $13K is not very cost effective. I would have opted for the Z06 in bang for the buck.

Word. Plus that 427 is plain bad a** :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: But very nice vette, all the same. :spot

Thanks for the replies everyone.

The reason he purchased a Callaway vs. Z06 is that he wanted a convertable and an automatic tranny. Both of which are not available in Z06. In his defense, he has terrible knees, just had one replaced 6 months ago, and can not easily drive stick anymore. I have not driven the Z06 yet, but I'd be surprised if it was not equally as quick even with the auto tranny. I know it will not feel as raw and handle as well as the Z06, but I think it's a pretty good compromise.

I agree with you guys about the dealer not having a clue what they are doing. The suspicion is that the guy who preps the cars was getting parts out of the trunk; and dragged something on the rear deck. Then tried to cover it up by compounding it out. He made it 10x worse that it was I am sure.

The body shop is going to try to correct it, and it will be the best guy they have with my Dad probably standing over his shoulder. The reason he is having them fix it, is so he can keep the ball in their court until it is resolved. I know I could make it new again, but if I can't, then he can't take it back after I have tried. IMHO, I would have him take it to the best pro detailer he can find on the dealers dime.

If someone here was going to attempt to repair this, what process would you use?

Scott- the best way to describe it, is the misson the mars ride at epcot. I was going about 60mph on the highway yesterday, and punched it, seriously it felt like launching from a dead stop. The coolest feature is the G-Fore meter on the heads up dispay.

Thanks,

Steve

If you tried to fix it and couldn't, the dealership would never know the difference. Look at how disgusting it looks now! Obviously the dealership isn't very observant, or they just don't know what they're doing.

Why bother having them remove more clear, when it's doubtful that it will look any better than it does now? If they performed a mutilation like that on brand new paint, what makes you think they'd be able to CORRECT the paint and leave it flawless?

I agree, It's not my car to say. I have no faith whatsoever they can fix it. I'd be willing to bet they will use a wool pad and compound and generate so much heat they deform the fiberglass.

Believe me, I wish I could give it a shot first. I am not a pro by any means, but I have an attention to detail and all the time in the world to get it right.

BTW if you were going to fix it, what would you do?

Thanks,

Steve

Beautiful Vette. I wouldn't take it to the dealer to repair, I'd have my lawyer write the dealership owner and inform him that it is being brought to a professional; detailer who will repair the dealer caused damage and that the dealership will be responsible for all expenses. I would also forward a copy of the letter to Callaway so they know that the dealer is delivering their product in such condition.

The damage happened before Callway.

SHICKS- I popped over to this thread after the "boat" one...

I know from bad knees, and your dad getting what he wants is all I'd care about ;)

Along those lines, I agree to let them try...I wouldn't on one of my cars but it's *his* car and if he wants to pursue it that way then OK. If he's anything like my dad was, he'll take a completely different view of the whole thing than we would.

But DFTowel's approach is one you might oughta at least *suggest* to your dad. He can still do it his way but I'd feel better knowing that he'd considered all the (proper) options. The letter to Calloway might get them thinking about accepting messed up cars for their conversions. I know that Mallett Cars would had a fit if a dealer sent them a car in that condition; they wouldn't want their name on something with that kind of marring. They would have either refused to do that car or they would've done a proper detail on it- they only deliver pristine cars. Calloway oughta take the same approach IMO.

I'd use a rotary and 3M PI-III RC (05933) then PI-III MG (05937) if it were mine.

I'd start with SSR2.5 and an orange pad, but I haven't worked on Corvette clear, so I don't know how much it would help. I would move up to SSR3/orange (or yellow) if the 2.5 didn't work.

Why does it marr so easily?

It does? Maybe your dad's is just marred because some clown was using a wool pad and compound on it without allowing it to break down. There are plenty of dumb things that a dealership employee may have done to cause the damage.

I just spoke with my Dad, he said it came out good. So now I have to figure out what products and procedure I'll use in a few weeks.

Good luck getting a Z06 for under $66k. The dealers arent giving them away at sticker.

I think its a completely differnet buyer that drives a Callaway vs. someone that drives a Z06. I'd probably buy a Callaway (lots of other cars first, this is toward the bottom of the long list) but I'd never buy a Corvette or Z06. Just not for me.
