2006 Black WRX - Start To Finish?

I just got my new 2Black 006 WRX a couple days ago. Now it rained and it is all dirty, grrr.... Do you have any tips for me so I wash it correctly without scratching it or causing swirl marks??? Just tell me exactly what to buy and how to do it. Thanks!!!!! I had a black car before and it was full of swirls and scratches so I know how much work it is to keep it nice, I must have done something wrong with that one. Hopefully I can keep this looking good longer, because I really love this car.

Honestly are those brushless car wash places ok or are those bad for the paint for any reason?

I can also wash it at home in my driveway by hand which i am sure is the preferred method but do not have anything, not even a bucket so need a list of everything I need, from a bucket, wash mit, soap, wax, to what to dry it off with including everything in between. Maybe there is a kit I could buy? I am looking for something farily simple yet highly effective and good quality safe to the finish products

I have read several of the forums and there is just too much information for a newbie like myself to comprehend so I was hoping for some personallized recommendations from you professionals.

Thanks!

For starters a good quality wash mit is good to start with (Wool, cotton chennile, etc). 2 buckets, one for wash and one for rinse (so you won't be contaminating the wash water w/ dirt that could potentially scratch your paint). A good car wash w/ lots of suds and lubricity is also good. For drying a MF Waffle Weave towel works great. Should also consider claying the car as well, just to remove w/e contaminents it got from the manf. and sitting ont he dealers lot,

For wax it's mroe or less personal preference. You could go w/ paint sealants or the traditonal carnauba waxes.

So, If I buy this will that have everything I need and this is good stuff or do you recommend anything else? Like do I need some polish too, like Klasse All-In-One? Do I need some other types of towels, applicators, etc? Look at my list and let me know if this is a good combination?

OXO - Mequiar's Wash Kit $54.99 (would this be good or should I buy some seperate items which might be better?)

Ya your location so we caould help you out..

I know i like PB which now has a pretty complete kit for sale on his web site.. other then that just keep getting kit's..

black is a pain I know.. but very nice when done right.. save up for a PC you'll need it.

www.poorboysworld.com for the kit (it's on the orderform link.)

Normally not a fan of kits, I personally like to mix and match for the best effect imo. However the ones you listed aren't bad. The ultra fine detailing clay is good, but it is pretty light compared to most other clays. You should use a more abrasive (?) clay first, then use the fine one in between detailing every so often. I haven't tried megs MF towels, but heard they aren't the greatest. The sonus towels and the concurs buffing towel on autopia are great though. Pakshak also makes some good MF towels.

Klasse AIO is more of a light polish then anything. It'll take off some surface contamination, but not a whole lot. If you're going to go the klasse route, AIO and SG is a good combo. Jeff's Werkstatt products may be a better alternative though. Mines is on the way so I can't do much of a side by side comparison.

Not a fan of kit's man it's an easy way to get a few free items.. mostly MF almost always there is a few added in to a kit..

When i got started i got the blackfire clay kit from cma,the klasse kit from autogeek(i belive).

but if i was going to do it again know now i would hit the PB kit and get some DMT while iwas at it..

Check out DavidB's detailing guide here--Autopia Detailing Guide

It is a good way to get started/organized with the process and tools required for proper detailing without all of the forum overload. After reading the guide, you can better decide for yourself what your goals are because you will get a million different opinions about the *best* way to care for your car.

One other thing I would like to add, I am still not 100% sure what a polish would accomplish on my new car. I just got it, and it was only on the dealer lot for 3 days because I special ordered it. I can't imagine the paint would require any polish (which from what I have been reading is an abbrasive) I would prefer to keep my clearcoat/paint as thick as possible. How often do you guys use polish on your cars on average?

Again, I wonder if using something like a pressure washer is bad? or using one of those touchless carwash places just about every gas station has around here?

Of course I would still like to hand wash/wax my car once a month if possible (or less often if I can get away with that). I assume you do not have to wax the car everytime you wash it to keep a good shine? I do live in SD so we have about 1/2 the year when it isn't nice outside (freezing temps, blizzards, etc), therefore I will not be able to wash and wax my car outside for about 1/2 the year.

So I guess I need something long lasting/durable and protecting of my paint, yet still looks good and is easy to use. Then another product (like a spray bottle) to use for touch-ups to keep the shine looking good between washes when there is just light dust on the car.

If using those gas station type touchless carwashes in the winter is ok let me know. If not how do you wash your cars in the winter?

Of course I can use those spray bottle type of detailing wax or whatever it is called when I dont have time to fully wax my car by hand, such as in the winter or just for touchups right?

Unfortunately I don't have 8 hours a week of extra time to wash and detail my car like some of you (I wish I did : )

Thank You!

Follow some of the liks abovr to find out about products.

You might want to think about claying it first. It probably has train rail dust or particles embedded during transport.

I just ordered this stuff. Anything else I need besides a wash mit or 2?

I tend to stay away from those touchless car washes. I guess I just don't trust them enough to not marr my car. They seem awfully forceful, but I could be wrong.

During winter-time, the Optimum No Rinse can be a really good friend. Just wash your car in the garage.

Collinite Insulator Wax is supposed to be very durable. I have no experience with it at all, but it's known for its longevity. I also like Optimum Car Wax, which is a spray wax that actually has carnauba. So if your lsp is carnauba-based, this would be a good supplement.

...and congratulations on your new car!

Nice job on your final selection; AIO isn't too bad of a product to play with especially for people just starting out and well received here; Let me know how that PB Bug Squash works since that's the one product I havn't tried yet...

Have fun and post a few pics of your car when completed

Here is where I am at right now. I am trying to create some instructions for myself:

Let me know if this is the correct order to apply these products. By the way I am applying all by hand :)

1-Rinse

2-Apply Poorboy’s Bug Squash to my darn bugs

3-wash using Meguiars NXT Generation Car Wash and a wool wash mit using 2 bucket method

4-Rinse

5-Dry using MICROPAK® Ultra-Soft Waffle Weave Micro Fiber Towel 25x36 Inches

6-use Clay + Lube pack - Sonüs SFX Ultra-Fine Detailing Clay (200 Gram)

7-Apply Klasse All-In-One using a terry-cloth applicator

8-Buff it off using MICROPAK® Ultra-Fine Micro Fiber Towel 16x16 Inches

9-Apply Klasse High Gloss Sealant Glaze

10-Buff it off using MICROPAK® Ultra-Fine Micro Fiber Towel 16x16 Inches

***Then to keep it looking good and to clean/touch-up small areas I can use my Sonus Acrylic Detail spray daily with my MICROPAK® Ultra-Plush Micro Fiber Towel 16x16 Inches

*** If dirty go over with my Optimum No Rinse, then use the Sonus Acrylic Detail spray

what do I use the MICROPAK® Yellow Foam Pads for? or should I just use those If I choose to apply a carnuba over the Klasse?

You said to buy some terry-cloth applicators to apply the AIO, what should I use to apply the Klasse High Gloss Sealant Glaze?

My next question is, what If I want to reapply more Klasse High Gloss Sealant Glaze after a weekly wash or after a month or so. Do I need to use the Klasse AIO first?

If I were to put Carnuba over the Klasse High Gloss Sealant Glaze then what steps do I need to preform If I want to wax again after a wash. I am assuming you could just apply more Carnuba, or should one use the AIO, then Klasse HG, then carnuba each time?

Thanks!

Klasse SG tip - Less is much more. Use very little, and apply at least 3 layers 12 or more hours apart.

The foam applicators can be used for both waxes and sealants. Terry-cloth applicators and MF pads are also some big favorites on application of sealants but it's more personal opinion. I tend to use the foam applicators for my carnaubas and SG and work very well and I don't have to keep a supply of both types of pads. However, I may use one of my Pinnacle Terry Pads and see if there's much of a difference in application hence I figured play it safe and say Terry. I remember reading from one guy on a thread that he soaks his MF pad with water, rings it out until it just has a very light damp feel, then applies the SG to it to make it easier to work with... :? Not sure how well that works.

Regarding Shicks tip, I would recommend just letting your car cure overnight and then adding another coat. That should be ample time. (As Shicks mentioned, 12 hours is always good, some people say 24 hours) One more tip, the general rule for SG and most sealants is that you should never use more than an ounce per standard sedan.

As for your other two questions regarding reapplication and AIO, I would prefer to hand over the torch to those a bit more familar with Klasse (I just use it for wheels only :))

Btw, your instructions look great! Nice job on picking up the two-bucket method here on the forums! :2thumbs:

Cheers,

GMCloud

Klasse SG is very finicky to remove. Even if it seems like you aren't putty anythign on the car, that's usually enough. Try to buff everything off before you put on your next layer as well.

You do not need to use AIO again if you want to put more layers on the next week after. Just wash, dry, then apply SG.

If you wanted to put a carnauba ont he car, just was, dry and put the wax on. However once you top it w/ the carnauba I don't think you can go over it w/ SG, may have some bonding issues. Someone correct me if I'm wrong though.
