2004 Pontiac GTO Wheels

Here's the deal. I'm doing a full detail on a 2004 Pontiac GTO. As I am told, the wheels on this vehicle are not clear coated. They are however coated in brake dust, and they have not been cleaned for almost an entire year. I wanted to hit them with my Brown Royal wheel cleaner, but I am not sure if this will strip the paint? Then I wanted to clay them to get the remaining junk off of them. Does anybody know what the deal is with this paint? Is it a single stage or something? Can I have at it with a standard wheel cleaner (brown royal), clay and polish. I took a look at them today. They are strange wheels........................

as far as I know they ARE Clear Coated

i actually have an 04 gto on stockers and thought they were clearcoated. after a little research on ls1gto, apparently the '04 17" are painted but not clear coated and the '05 and '06 are CC'd. weird. also, ive used megs wheel brightner on them at full strength and it didnt do anything to the paint.

all i can say for certain is bring q-tips. lots of them.

Is there any benefit to polishing them or should i just clean the brake dust and call it a day?

the only thing i would worry about would be the tiny corners being sealed up after cleaning. as far as stock wheels go, theyre a royal PITA to clean.

also keep in mind im just a detailing weekend warrior, so hopefully others will chime in

Does anybody have any cleaned pictures or advice on "polishing." These wheels look shot .....

I am going to use Brown Royal to actually clean the wheels,... I will follow that up with a fine clay, probably California Gold...
