2002 Toyota, no clear coat

This thread is like Deja Vu to me...



Last year over at ClubLexus, I conducted a survey about the Black Onyx colored vehicles, and the results were that Lexus changed their black to a base/clear in and around model year 2001. It may even have been a change that occurred during the 2000 year run.



The members were given instructions on how to discern the difference (which everyone here is aware of) and report back their results along with Lexus model and year of vehicle.



I cannot say that this says anything definitive about the Toyota line of cars, but I feel pretty safe it's accurate for the Lexus line.



P.S. Some members reported differing info from the dealers themselves, on this matter, prior to the "test".
 
Yeah, it does throw you off when 90% of the 2000+ car owners come back saying base/clear, then you get couple with the same year vehicle that contradict it. It's hard to believe that many cars (percentage wise) are having paint work done from dock/ transport damage, but then, who knows?



I always get this picture of the guys in the factory yelling at each other; "Hey Joe, those were supposed to be clearcoats and you hit the wrong paint batch button again!"



Heh, well, it's as good an explanation as any I can come up with. :D

You ought to see the longshoremen take the cars off the boat some time :eek: Afterwards, you would probably wonder how any cars make it off the boat in one piece! :nixweiss



When I first started at Toyota, I got to tour the Port of Long Beach and watch them unload a boat that had just arrived. Looking back at it now, it reminds me of that movie "Gone in 60 seconds". I don't remember exactly how many cars fit on a boat (I think around 5000) and those guys unload the entire boat in around 3-4 hours. To them, they get paid a minimum of 8 hours work and if they do it in less, better for them!



I won't even go into how much those guys get paid too!
 
I can give you an idea of their pay. We went on a cruise out of Long Beach last summer. The longshoremen get a dollar per bag to get your bags to the ship. There were appx. 24,000 pieces of luggage on the ship and about 10 guys doing the loading. This is above and beyond their pay! For that money, they offered NO information as they simply shrugged their shoulders when asked a question. Whenever I see these guys complaining about pay and people feel bad for them I get angry because those people OBVIOUSLY have NO idea how much money they make. Oh yeah, there is a cruise ship in the particular port 3 times per week!
 
Actually, I do know how much they get paid and it is an outrageous amount for what they do. I just didn't think it was appropriate to post it here. I makes me mad that I went to college and work my butt off with 80 hour work weeks and they make just as much as I do and they probably only work maybe 15-20 hours a week with probably no education required.

Not sure if this is all car manufacturers but when I did autobody and I looked up paint codes, wherever the RPO sticker the Paint code is listed there.



Mine for example is listed BC/CC WA8555, Black Chevy Camaro. It is at the bottom of the sticker.



GM in general writes specifically on the RPO sticker BC/CC or SS if its single stage



Check the RPO sticker maybe it will tell you. Also its hard to believe that manufacters arent using clear coat seeing as how much more effective it is than SS paint. Tinting is also becoming much more popular now adays.

From my understanding, Toyota blacks don't have a clear coat. Of course, it's rather a pain without a clearcoat.



My Camry dating to being manufactured in July of 1995 has a dark green pearl paint to it that has a clearcoat. It's with flakes. My Sienna with Blue Mirage Metallic has a clearcoat as well.
 
I think Lexus's Black Onyx Pearl and Toyota's Black don't have it (fancy name for the exact same color). All the other colors with metallics do have it.

I might believe if he was talking about an 06 GS, but why would they switch to a different painting process on the last run of that body style... doesn't make sense. With your logic I should be taking medical advice from the receptionist in my doctors office just because she is an employee of the business.

All the pads i use on my black onyx lexus is300 come out black. When I spot-polish parts of my car (areas including the door hood, roof, trunk) with unused pads with products as mild as p21s paintwork cleanser and vanilla moose, they come out black.



I've worked on a black gs300 and same result.. black pads with vanilla moose.
