2002 Toyota, no clear coat

I started polishing an 02 highlander today and was surprised to find that it's a single stage black paint. I didn't think they still had ssp on Toyota's. It seems to cut very easy so I think I should be careful with the cutting pad. Sorry no pics yet, I'll try to get some tomorrow.
 
Really? Sure its original paint, and not a repaint over body repairs? Seems a bit odd, as I did a 2003 highlander once, and it had BC/CC. Plus, I've seen original CC paints on cars dating back to '93. Keep us posted.
 
I have heard a number of things about recent Toyota black paint. SS, BC/CC and then the tinted CC thing. My sisters '02 Lexus gives a little black but not a lot which makes me want to go along with the tinted idea. This is rather confusing.
 
To add, Paint Scratch shows BC/CC but doesn't indicate if that CC is tinted at all. I'm going to give them a call in the morning.
 
Not being a smart *** at all but what proof do you have? toyoemp has stated that the Lexus paint isn't SS paint and he's a Toyota employee.
 
I've got a 2003 MR2 Spyder, and according to Toyota, nothing is clearcoated unless it's a "metallic." My single stage black is soft as butter. I have to be VERY careful what I use to remove even the lightest scratches.
 
Toyota paint? I own a Toyota and have been trying to get the paint code for my painted wheels from them for over 2 months. I have a few chips that need filling but can't seem to get the proper code from them. They have been "working on getting the information" for 2 months. I was finally told that they don't have the info. The customer rep said that Toyota recommends a repaint for chipped wheels. After I finished laughing at the idiot I asked her, lets say I'm stupid enough to repaint for a few chips how would I know what color to use without the paint code? Of course this brought us back to step one.

Not exactly. I only stated that *my* black cars have been clear coated. I can not comment on all the models across all the years since that is not my area of expertise.

Gotcha, my mistake. It still seems to be VERY inconclusive at this point. I also got some info. from a Meguiar's employee that has an 02 or 03 IS 300 and he also gave up the tinted CC thing.:confused:

1) The basecoat is the the actual paint color.

2) This paint REQUIRES clearcoat.



You need to order both the basecoat and clearcoat so the color will match properly. If you have a rusted area, you should order the primer. Enter the quantities below for the products you wish to order. Clearcoats and primers cannot be ordered without a basecoat.
 
Pintscratch.com is not always 100% correct, keep that in mind. I have also had different "statements" about my Toyota paint from different people online and at the dealership. I saw a Camry this weekend ( a white 040, 1998 I believe) that had a sticker in the doorjamb that stated the car was painted with DuPont Imron. Original owner verified the car had never been repainted. Some people have told me that most of the Toyota whites are now Imron, and a lot of the Lexus balck is SS.
 
Sorry guy's I can't get my pic to upload or delete any in my gallery, very odd. The owner has had it since new and says it has not been repainted. My pads were very black when I was done, especially the cutting pad. Maybe they send the cars they don't fell like clear coating to Canada;) If I can ever get my pics to upload I will post them. The process I used was wash, clay, ssr 2.5 with cutting pad twice, ssr 2.5 with polishing pad once, WG sealant. This vehicle was a absolute mess. I should have entered it in the detail contest. There were a lot of deep scratches that did not come all out but other than that it looks very nice. The owner should be very impressed.

Funny, I have never noticed any type of paint manufacturer sticker on any of my cars before so I ran downstairs and looked on all 3 cars I have here. None of my cars have this type of sticker, only plant, paint code and interior code. I will have to remember to check my other cars in AZ later this week when I am out there.



Couple things to keep in mind --



1. Just because the owner has never repainted the car doesn't mean that the car hasn't been repainted. The car could have been damaged coming off the boat (or since you are in AL, more likely the train since the car probably came from Kentucky) and the port could have repainted the damaged areas. Manufacturers are not required to divulge any repairs made to a vehicle before delivery to a dealer.



2. Toyota tries to source at least 90% of the parts used to make a vehicle locally (both for economics and politics). This means that another plant in another part of the world may not (or probably wont) use the same supplier as another plant. Case in point -- in the specific example of Camrys, I know that the windshield wipers on Camrys made in Kentucky are of a different length than the ones made in Japan. I have a japanese made camry myself and always have to remember to specify japan-made when getting replacement blades because the american ones are longer. It would not surprise me if the differences also applied to paint. (but I do not know this for a fact)



Just my 2 cents, but my point is that trying to apply any type of blanket statement about bc/cc vs ss to any Toyota vehicle is pretty pointless IMO. You need to take into account a lot of different factors like make/model/plant/date of manufacture before you can get specific information about a specific vehicle.
 
Thanks for that info! I contacted Paint Scratch today and got nothing useful from them. They insisted that everything on the planet from about '86 has a CC and the black Toyota cars were included. The dilemma continues....
 
I belong to Spyderchat and we have a long going debate on the clear coat issue for the MRS. It was my understanding that the Mica paints were clear coated. PaintScratch says they all of the Spyder paints need clear coat and the parts dealer who pulled out the paint code book showed me that all of the paint codes for the Spyder are not clear coated. When I detailed my sisters black Camry and my Spyder my pads did turn black.



This is just confusing for the members of Spyderchat. I hope some of you experts can figure out this riddle. :nixweiss
