2002 Camaro Z28 with Meguiars Paint Protect 365

The Guz

Mike
For those that don't quite remember, I had coated my dad's car as seen in this thread.

http://www.autopia.org/forums/click-brag-the-detailers-showcase/181365-2002-camaro-z28-coated-2.html

Unfortunately while my dad was painting the gates around the house, he got overspray on the car. The car was parked on the street in front of the house. I contacted the coating manufacturer and was told that if a lot of clay lube and little pressure with a few passes, the coating would stay in tact. This was also with a fine grade clay bar. Well the overspray required more work and after claying the coating was compromised. The beading and sheeting was zero to none after washing it. Here's an idea of the overspray.

Prior to starting I had done a test spot a week before and I had to go with a compound to remove any remaining coating as a polish did not completely remove it. I used M100 followed by M205. I did find a high spot that I missed when I coated it. M100 knocked it off. The paint on this car is hard so M100 actually finished LSP ready. It also did not take a lot of passes to remove the coating. Three to four section passes removed it. I'll add all the products at the end that I used.

Started off with some machine cleaning of the tires. Thanks goes to Mike Philips for his article http://www.autogeekonline.net/forum/ask-expert-featuring-mike-phillips/62454-best-darn-tire-cleaning-brush-i-ve-ever-used.html

There were some minor defects. They could have been on the coating and not the paint.

After - This is after 4 passes with M100

I did get some 2" pads from Kevin Brown some time ago and I corrected these on the sail panel. I did not have a smaller pad the last time other than a 3". These 2" pads knocked it out. Thanks to Kevin Brown. I used M100 > M205 > Menz SF4500 > Paint Protect 365 to get them to look better.

I did not take that many before photos as there was not a lot of defects on the car. I have to redo the DP Glass Coating another day. Here are the afters.

Wash: Meguiar's Hyper Wash

Decon: Clay with Meguiar's D155 Last Touch to remove any tiny amounts of paint overspray

Compound: M100 on a DFC5 Burgundy Foam Pad

Polish: M205 on a DFP5 Yellow Polishing Foam Pad, Menzerna SF4500 DFF5 Black Foam Pad (Hood and fenders only to tret out product sample a friend of mine sent me.)

Prep: CarPro Eraser (completely optional)

Protection: Paint Protect 365

Tires: Machine Cleaned with Meguiar's D143 at 2:1, Dressed with Blackfire Total Eclipse

Wheels: Polished with Meguiar's Fine Cut Metal Polish, Sealed with Adams Quick Sealant

Tool: Meguiar's MT300, Harbor Freight 2 in Central Pneumatic Polisher

Decided to stick with a sealant this time until I decide to coat it again in the future.

Some things to comment on. M100 is a great compound. It has an extremely long working time compared to M105. It finished out LSP ready on this hard paint. It still dusts bit not as much as M105. I had more dust as it was somewhat humid this weekend.

Paint Protect does indeed have a darkening effect. Not sure how long that lasts. Very little product is needed with this and I mean very little. Applying it like a coating is the way to go with this one. It allows for better coverage and an easier application. This will also be a durability test of Paint Protect as it will be left alone and untouched with any spray waxes or soaps with waxes etc... We will see how handles the so called El Nino that is supposed to take place her in Southern California.

Here's my application method of Paint Protect. I'm not a lefty so bear with me lol.

Guz, that's looks like a serious amount of overspray to be removed !!

How is the longevity of the product? Do you have previous experience with it? I don't hear anyone discussing it...

I have used paint protect several times and can't say that I really care for it. i'm a megs fan and feel that meguiar's let me down on this one. I never saw any real lasting effects of the product, especially the claimed crazy beading, the resulting gloss to me was so, so, and it seemed to have a very oily base. of course, surface prep is everything and guz, you did a great job above and the very nice finish shows it, but I hope the product holds up for you. the plus side of the product is the excellent price point, ease of use, and the fact that a little goes a long way.

Got some nice shine !!!!

Yeah it does. It's no coating but it will do for now.

Thanks. The overspray was on almost every panel and on the glass. I can't comment longevity as this is the first full car I used it on. I have tested it a little on the hood on my daily driver and it was still going strong at 4 months before I removed it to try another product. This will be a longevity of this product to see if it does indeed last a year.

Thanks. Like you I was underwhelmed with the beading of this product as well. But overtime as I was testing it the beading got better. Was a weird phenomenon and I will see if that happens again. It does sheet pretty well. I figured why not give it a go and see if lives up to their claim. Meguiar's has stated that this is not meant to be a glossy product but as you stated it's all about the surface prep. You are correct that it is an oily product. I was able to level it out pretty well with the applicator which made it easier to remove. Things tend to last longer here in Southern California than in other regions of the country so that does play a factor as well.

Nice Work!

Thanks.

Looks great, and yes Menzerna 4500 is the best I've ever used. Congrats!

Thanks. I will be getting their new version and add that to my collection.

nice job with that clean up

Thanks.

Mike -
Oh wow - serious clarity and gloss here !!!!

Since you just did this recently, doing it again lightly took it up another level or two !
Its beautiful !!! You Killed It !!!

Now, take that dang paint sprayer from your Dad's garage and hide it so it wont happen again... :) :) :)

Dan thanks. Oh he was bummed out after I noticed it after I had finished washing it. I asked him if he noticed it and he said no and it was all over the glass. I asked him how did you not notice that lol. He could not fathom the idea that once the wind gets a hold of particles nobody knows where they land. I think he gets it now.

Going to wait until after SEMA to see what other coatings come out. I will eventually coat it again. I will let Paint Protect run it's course.

Excellent work guz, presentation was great, I like how you linked all the products you used ..:bigups

RIP 2002 Camaro Z28

Well some disheartening news. The car was stolen sometime between midnight-5am last Thursday. It was recovered on Saturday. Went to look at it today and it's completely stripped.

The LS1 V8, the A4 trans, the Magnaflow Cat-Back Exhaust, the SLP front grille, doors, lights are all gone.

Very sad. My dad had it for 8 years.
