2000 grit sandpaper

If a scratch is real bad but still in the clear coat. Can you sand with 2000 grit before you compound.

yes, you can.



You need to make sure you have something for a backing though so you don't put finger marks in the paint. A sanding block works or a small piece of cardboard folded over a few times.



Make sure you wipe the area dry every few passes so you can stop when the scratch is out.



The problem with colorsanding is it can easily take off more than the .3 mils of clear that contain the UV blockers so many people don't colorsand and just leave the scratch in there.

Meguiars makes a good little system along with 3M. meguiars uses same sized grit particles so that the sanding is more smooth and will level the surface. If you have a regular 2000 grit paper the particles can be different sizes. The 3M system is Great. They have special grit(forget the particle name) that is shaped that of a pyramid. perfectly spaces and same sized as well. The pyramid grit wears evenly too to allow great leveling. Either, one are good.



I say if it is small leave it alone.

A good thing to have on hand are art erasors. Go to a hobby shop and buy the white rectangular erasors. You can cut them to various sizes but the key is they are perfectly flat yet flexible. These white erasors are much preferred over the standard pink type.



Meguiars sanding blocks in 1500 and 2000 grit are also good but they are not flexible. They are best used for sanding down touch up paint blob buildup.



Remember, always use the sandpaper and blocks wet.
