2 hard questions to ponder over

Tex Star Detail

Formerly TexasTB
How many publicly owned HIGHWAYS are in the United States?..
How many publicly owned TOLL ROADS are in the United States?

I was presented with these questions today, and need to find the answers?
Anyone care to take a shot????

I am sure that I am wrong in this but I don't think that i have ever driven on anything other than public highways or toll roads. I have been on a few private lanes in my younger days but highways and toll roads are all public.

so my answer would be ...ALL OF THEM.

I know there were PRIVATE toll roads in SoCal around 5-7 years ago. My guess is they are still there. Good luck with the search.

Who asked you the question and where did they get their source of information? There isn't a national registry of publicly owned toll roads or anything, so I'm just curious how he will know if you give him the correct answer?

1 they are all connected they just have a different names at different spots.

I'm just joking, does seem like a pretty odd question though.
Did you ask if it just the continental 48 or does this include Alasks & Hawaaii (sp?)

If they were private...who owned them? How long were they and where did they go? i would bet(do not know this for sure)that there was federal funding and most likely state funding for those so called private roads.

A family friend asked. He is a broker. In Houston, they are selling the toll roads....or something...(it's still early, and I'm tired) I don't have the whole story....... But he said if I can come up with the answer close to his, he will buy a bunch of stock in them, and let my kids have them.....He said once the roads are bought, the stocks will sky rocket.....Like I said, I don't know more than what my wife told me...have to talk to him in person..... :eat:

The stipulation for a "Privet Road" is it "Must be closed to the public for 1 day out of the year" that Includes Privet Toll Roads also....good example is Dingmans Ferry Bridge http://www.nps.gov/dewa/InDepth/Spannin2/stgDFBRG.html

Ownership could be a family, coop, corporation, just about any one could....Insurance is off the scale for ownership though, and there is not many left in the US any more.

Thanks Beercan 31. That gives me a better idea of private roads.

I did a google search of the number of public roads in the US. All searches led me to a book or paper that needed to be purchased. Which I didn't do. Of course if they had offered a ten percent DC discount and a free MF towel I might have gone ahead and purchsed the book. On can never have to many MF towels.
