A PC would have to be on steroids to level that paint down! It just doesn't generate enough heat and friction. a PC, as well as the Cyclo, are mainly polishers and finishers but not paint correctors....did any of that make sense?

Yes, makes sense to me, but were you using the Cyclo the whole time or were you using a rotary, too?



If you don't mind me asking, how much did you charge for that job? If you'd rather not say, that's just fine. :)

I first used a rotary to level the paint and I did this at about 1800 rpm's with a Lake Country Orange pad and Menzerna Powergloss (I think that's the name of it) and this cutting compund is great stuff, in fact it did a better job than anything I have by Meguiars.



The Cyclo I used only as a polisher with finishing pads and Light Cut.



I charged the Dr. $380.00

All in total I have at least 9 or 10 hours total in the car. I could of have it done in about 6 or 7 hours but I took some extra time just messin around with the Menzerna Powergloss and different pads just to see what it can and can't do.



I would not recommend the Menzerna for use by hand as it is pretty aggressive, more so than DACP. I am adding the Menzerna line up to my aresenal for sure:xyxthumbs

Thank you for the :up I am out of San Antonio and I have one full time employee and also a part-time helper that will only be with me for maybe another week or so until he finds another job.



I actually prefer to work alone as I can take my time and just, this sounds odd, but enjoy the detail. I am sure other pros here know what I am talking about, like Scott I am sure sees detailing as I do, a form of therapy.



It all comes down to money though as therapy doesn't pay the bills so having an extra hand or two comes in handy for that

Sounds like you are very pleased with M's Power Gloss. Couple of questions, if you don't mind:



1) Did you work it until it dusts off a la DACP or leave it a little wet for the wipe-off?



2) Do you think (know) if it breaks down into finer and finer "grits" like DACP?



3) Would you (could you) work it with a PC, only longer than with a rotary, and get acceptable results?



4) If DACP is considered a 6 on Meg's aggressive scale, where would you place PG ?

1) Yes. I worked it until it was just about gone and a few times I was interupted by either a phone call or someone coming up to me and all I had to do, because it is water-based, was mist it lightly with some water to "re-activate" it. It dries rather quickly but as long as you are working it with the rotary it stays wet.



2) Yes it is a product with diminishing abrasives much like DACP.



3) It is hard to comment on #3 because I have to date only used it with a rotary and either a cutting pad or a polishing pad. I do know that with the Lake Country Orange pad it left only minor compund markings and then with a Lake Country white polishing pad it cleaned up those marks and left no additonal hazing.



I would assume (cautiously) that with a proper amount of working it would work OK with a PC. So for instance if you are just using the Menzerna line you may want to use the PG first then the IP and finish it of with the FP. Hand apply some AIO and I am guessing you would have an intense finish.



4) I would place the PG perhaps a full notch or two above DACP. It seems that the DACP and the Menzerna IP are just about on the same level and the PG is a step above in grit than the IP for sure.

That was amazing. For $380 you just increased the value of that car by probably $2000-$3500. That was quite an investment by the lazy Doctor. I hope he gave you a sizable tip.



When you price a detail like this, do you go on an hourly rate or is it fixed bid? If it is fixed bid, do you charge a premium for a tough job like that?

It rained here today......I bet that pretty white paint is now all dingy..oh well a good wash should bring it back to life. Ahh, Texas weather, ya gotta love it!



My pricing usually reflects a fixed bid rather than hourly. Washes I aim more for hourly wages. I would of normally finished this detail the first day but because it was so trashed and I had my other regulars to take care of I could not spend an entire day just hammering it out so I had to do a little here and a little there. Not to mention being interupted by the rainy weather we have had here.



I also used this detail to see what the potential of the Menzerna PG was and it's also cool every so often to get a car that challenges you. I am guessing if I had went higher in price then the Doctor may have balked at said it wasn't worth it BUT glad to say he was very pleased with the results and while I did not get a tip he will pass my name on to some of his wealthy friends...so that is a plus!

Great job Anthony !!! I own a 93 black 500 SEL and I must admit I felt a little sick at the before pics of that one !!! I am placing an order of M's PG thanks to this thread !!! You should receive a commision from them !!!
