British Racing Green

-British racing green' in motorsport terms meant only the colour green in general

-an awesome color that was named in honor or some awesome people across the pond ;)

This car is a special edition Mazda Miata. It was the japanese best attempt to make a little british sportscar... it still managed to stay out of the shop most of the time however ;). This particular car has been cared for with the utmost respect for the majority of its life (except the 1st two years of which we do not know). At the time when this car was built it was a big deal. The cars were getting a premium which was over the sticker price. People didnt know what they were really as there were not MANY sports cars around at the time. The owner was telling me stories about how he would get stopped at traffic lights and such to ask what it was. Without a doubt he LOVES this car.

The car has 30,000 miles on it(!).

Not many people know this but for every model of mazdas there are, there are "special editions" that are kept quiet. For instance with the the RX-8's special edition was yellow. There were 400 yellow (special editions) RX-8s made. I was at dinner with a good family friend of ours from out of town and he was telling us about that... coincedently, there is one JUST 2 houses up the street from me. So i called him that second, and he was AMAZED!

Anyway, to the car. This cars paint was in rouph shape and i only had a limited amount of time to work on this car as tomorrow (saturday) the floor in my garage is being torn up. I wish i had the time to work on every aspect of this car to get it to the condition it should be but again time was limited. I decided that i wanted to make 1 aspect of the car absolutely perfect... so obviosly i decided on the paint. And it turned out to be about 95% perfect as it was pretty bad to be honest.

As you can see the paint was in bad shape so i started off with Menzerna Super Intensive Polish and it just wasnt cutting it. So i stepped it up to Meguiars 105

DSCF0022.jpg

DSCF0021.jpg

I then went down to Megs Super intensive polish to get rid of the Compound haze and majority of the Holograms

(btw, i did NOT use ultrafina)

I finally realised that to make this paint perfect i would have to jewel the paint with a pad that has very low mechanical action and a final polish... however i didnt have enouph time.

My origional plan was to do Menzerna 106 on Lake country white pad and then use a blue or black Lake country pad to burnish or jewel the paint. But i decided that i needed to re adjust. So i tested 106 on a black 3m 5 inch UK pad (came in the mail literally 5 mins before i needed them)... PERFECT!!!

I then had to think about what this car was used for and what would be best in terms of wax or sealant. I know that zaino has a big following over in the UK but its a little old over here so i wanted to try something that i havent quite gotten used to... so OUT CAME THE DODO!

I applied 2 coats of Dodo Juice Supernatural to the paint and i thought it looked great!

So that was that and now time for some pics!

Coincidentally tomorrow there are a few things going on. For one, My garages floor is going to be torn up and that is going to be a new begging for the garage and also i am hopefully selling my 1977 Porsche 911S... so i had to take a few pictures. I spent over 2 weeks getting everything out of my garage and now it is finished. We had everything from champaigne bottles that my dad sprayed everywhere at his first SCCA national race to a wooden frame that we built to put over my dads old 356 Speedster to protect it... it ALL had to come down. After everything is in there we are heating and cooling the garage, putting epoxy floor down, painting the walls with some logos of cars (Porsche, Ferrari) and then i am going to have a perfect garage/detailing bay/office. I will have pics of it!

Here is the garage all cleaned out with the cars in it...

Then one of me and dad for the photo album

Hope you guys enjoyed it! The pics (in my opinion) did not come out too well. It looked much better in person (but thats what they all say haha).

A big thanks to to Todd Helme of Bella Macchina for all the help over the phone! If anyone ever needs a detail and florida... or anywhere else in the world... hes your guy!

Kind Regards,

Dan

P.S. I thought it was funny i detailed this car at this particular time... when i might buy a miata myself.

Looks like you did a great job. Keep up the good work.

Nice Porsche 914. My first Porsche was a 914/916 and I loved that thing. The 1977 911s sounds fun, why you selling it?

I am 44 yrs old and I have owned 45 cars. Everything from show quality 69 Chevelle's to my new C6 Z06. Sandwiched in between somewhere were two Mazda Miata's. With all my ownership experience, I must tell you that overall, there is no better bang for the buck than a Miata. My Chevelle was a real head turner. My Z06 is sheer acceleration and mind numbingly fast. But in a different way, my Miata's were probably the most fun overall. They were like driving a street legal go-kart. I think the very low price of the Miata played a role as well. I mean, my first Miata cost 6k and my Z06 cost 70k. Do the math. Here's a very interesting fact about the Miata that most people don't know. Did you know that the Mazda Miata actually made it into the Guiness Book of World Records?

Yup, it holds the record for the worlds best selling sports car. :wow:

Thanks! The owner loves his car and is a good friend of my fathers so i wanted to give him a good present.

I have loved the 914 since i saw it. My father was the 2nd owner and bought it from a guy he knew well. We have had that car since i was born and i LOVE it. I bought the 914 from my father a year ago and i am selling that also. It is being sold to pay a part of a 993.

The 77 911 is notoriously a not a good model year. The drive is crazzy awesome, but the engines in the 77 are not as good (as it has been explained to me). They produce less HP then normal engines and are not a durable. It is a ticking time bomb.

Great job Daniel! Your father should be very proud of you with the talent you have.

Thanks Ryan!

He thinks its cool but doesnt appreciate it TOO much. In my city there are not people (or more then 2 or 3) who want to spend anywhere close to a grand on a detail (and a lot of the cars here i would need to charge that much). So he wants me to just do what brings in money (low quality higher quantity).

BTW did Todd give you the email of the client i have for you? He is in Belmont.

Geez that car had some deep marring! Excellent job! Very nice writeup as well!

Yea i was amazed. He has been drying the car with a leather chamois its whole life.

Yea they are great cars! The one i might buy is 2900 so it is a good price. My father raced a '91 in '95 so he tells me that they are a BLAST to drive. We dropped the car off at the guys house but dad said that it was too bouncy and the tires were too high. Then we realized he had racing tires on his street car. haha

And a guy told me that it can corner at almost as many G's as the F1 cars... i dont believe him though. I realised that you were right with the best selling SPORTS car. I would have guessed VW beetle for the best selling car.

,dan

And thanks for all the support guys!

Thank you Daniel for the referral. Todd did give me a call last night with the contact info. Thanks for info and I appreciate it big time.:2thumbs:

The car turned out great. Good job, how long did it take you?

Another thing, were you able to figure out what in fact differentiates the special editions from the regular cars? The owner of the car that I did mentioned the air conditioning and some other very minor stuff...

As you shouldn't. He obviously knows nothing about F1 cars. Just for the record, there is no street car that will ever even come close to cornering like an F1 car, and definitely not a Miata. They can be made to be pretty impressive for what they are, but that comparison is absurd.

Thanks, took me about 15 hours over 3 days.

And i am not sure what differentiates it. But the AC is not just on this special edition. I was looking a non special edition 91 miata to buy and it also has AC (even more rare; it works!). But im not buying it. Im not sure what im doing.

Yep you are VERY right. I have seen more spec miata races then some spec miata racers and i can tell you that a dodge neon with a good driver can almost out handle it... ESPECIALLY in the rain.

And i have seen f1 cars also... The is NOTHING that can come close to them. They are AMAZING!! I will never forget the first time i saw one in person.

Looks good, my dad just sold his '95 M Edition Miata and bought a brand new '08 MX-5 with the power hard top. I told him to put the '95 w/ 77k miles on Craigslist for $4500 for a quick sale and it went in a day. Guy resold it on ebay for $7k, for a 13 year old Miata in average-to-below average condition! I recently sold my '03 V6 Accord coupe in excellent condition for $10,700...wow, sorry, just had to tell that story :)

Basically, the story of the British Racing Green Miata goes something like this...

When Mazda first launched the Miata for model year 1991, they were selling like hot cakes. Mazda decided to add more fuel to the fire, and add a special edition to the market as well...which is where the BRG Miata comes in.

For the next model year, 1992, there was a Brilliant Black Miata that was the special edition car (only 1500 units were produced). Ironically, Sunburst Yellow was also available as a $250 option in 1992, and since so few people ordered / bought yellow ones, it ended up becoming one of the rarest Miatas ever.

Here is a link to a Sunburst Yellow one I detailed a while back...

http://www.autopia.org/forum/click-brag/107894-17-year-old-sunburst-yellow-miata.html

This one only has 43,000 miles on it, and the owner has gotten offers for @ $10,000 for it.

There are also "R" models that have been produced over the years. I am not sure of what all is different with the R model, but I know it comes WITHOUT a/c, no power steering, and some suspension upgrades.

Yea i also believe the Special Edition 91 has 'special' wood trim on the interior. That is just about all the difference it has (the owner told me).

Hm i wouldnt mind having a black 82!
