1991 Porsche 928GT, quickie on an ML430-56k, read War and Peace

Wow damn. Were you able to completely remove all the swirls or were there some that eluded you? I'm just wondering how hard the paint was overall.

Two questions Scott :

Is that single stage paint (looking at the blackness of your pads ?)

And how do you manage to get something out of that Optimum polish botlle, mine "blocks" every time I want to use it !

1. 2 stage paint. The clear coat was dull in a few areas and the car probably hadn't been properly polished since the repaint.

2. I keep it well shaken and clean the nozzle after each use.

David-he couldn't believe the improvement just after using Hyper Compound. he tracks the car regularly and said he'd pass my name along to all his racing buddies. :)

His reaction when I was completely finished was almost as rewarding as the check he gave me. Almost. ;)

picus-there were a few swirls on the pillar behind the passenger's door that wouldn't come out completely, even after hazing the paint pretty good. After cleaning up the hazing they were mostly gone but not 100%. The hood came out amazingly good though.

Not knowing the hardness of the paint, I started with Optimum Compound and a polishing pad. Slow progress, bumped to Hyper and a polishing pad, better, but still slow. switching to a cutting pad did the trick but left some minor hazing that going back to a polishing pad (still with Hyper) removed.

The paint was very smooth, he'd been using Zaino then RejeX over the last 3 years he's owned it quite regularly. Not much industrial fallout here and if you don't live near RR tracks or regularly travel crappy roads, if you keep your car waxed around here, you don't need to clay very often. I haven't had to clay mine since I got it almost 2 years ago.

I clay as needed but only list it if it was a major step. I pretty much consider light claying a part of the washing step.

Werkstatt products for the majority of cars? Either Prime or Prime Strong and AJ-Trigger. Regular AJ might be a bit more durable but Trigger is as easy as using a QD or OCW. Same look too. AJ is deeper looking (to me) than most sealants so I also use it regularly on black-except my car since mine is more of a bright black instead of a black black if that makes any sense. I park next to a customer's Cayenne and it is noticably 'blacker' than my car.

Gotcha. Thanks Scott. Maybe I'll order some up.....probably get some with the carnauba in it as well..why not

This is just beautiful Scottwax!!! I was hoping to see pics of the 928 when you mentioned you were gonna do it the other day. I'm always psyched to know the reactions of your customers. I would think that some of these people come close to soiling themselves when they see thair cars! :D

BTW, Werkstatt and Optimum need to payroll you for the amount of business they get from people seeing your work.

Right - gotchya. Looks amazing, by the way, great job. Definitely a quality re-paint by the looks of it (who'da thunk it?!) :)

I was really impressed. No overspray in the door jams or gas cap area, the trim was obviously removed and whoever wetsanded, cut and buffed the car is a master. Not a rotary swirl anywhere that I could find. :)

Works the other way too, maybe I should pay beyond the cost of their products because they work so well and make me look good. ;)

90% is technique but with equal technique, you do notice a difference using high quality products.

Awsome work!!! I just ordered a bottle of Hyper compound so hopefully I can improve my swirl busting

It does a pretty good job and on harder paints, like GM and Audi, it finishes down well.

That's good to know. I have a black 2005 GMC Sierra to do next week that is swirled very badly. I have Optimum polish, but after taking a look at the truck yesterday, I think I better get a order in for some hyper compound.

BTW, excellent job on that Porsche! :xyxthumbs

Simply an amazing turnaround Scott! It's hard to believe it's the same 928GT. Glad to see you made this one beautiful again. Always a fav Porsche of mine.

Amazing work!!

I love that Porsche! Never heard about the 928 until now. I was looking at the 944 and 968's, but this 928 is definately the sexier of the 3.

The 928 was out before the 924/44/68s! I believe he said his car makes in the neighborhood of 350 hp. Really has a wicked idle too.

Scott, on black which do you prefer: OCW or Carnauba Jett? I have OCW already, so I'm not sure if I should get CJ as well.

CJ had a darker look but isn't as easy to apply as OCW. I can go with either and be happy.
