1976 Porsche - Guardsman Red - Correcting the Repaint

Much as I love FK1000P, IMO it'd give the wrong look on that particular vehicle/paint. I'd probably go with Collinite 476S instead (*maybe* M16, personal preference issue...) and if I were using an AIO underneath I'd almost certainly go with Autoglym Super Resin Polish (never hear about that stuff much here at Autopia).

OH BOY. Just when I thought I was done buying waxes! Would the 476 have better durability?

Googled it. Cuz I haven't heard about it before, just like you mentioned. The Autoglym won Detailing World Polish of the Year from 2011-2014. How would you apply this? If by machine, use a polishing pad, or finishing?

One last question: How would you decide when to use KAIO or Autoglym?

With all the stuff you already have, I hesitate to push the 476S (though I have cans of their Pre-VOC version available ;) ). It *is* a nice wax though, and it's what I use when I don't want a "sealanty look". I dunno...Guard's Red is one of those colors where different people have different preferences. *I* just might like M16 on it but that's as close to the "FK1000 look" as I'd want to come.

I use the Autoglym SRP instead of KAIO when I want a little (and I mean a *VERY* little) filling and greater durability. Plus, it just looks better to me; sometimes that matters even when topped (IMO). E.g., I use SRP topped with Souveran on my Jag. BUT...SRP stains trim, so if that'd be an issue I'd use KAIO. And, of course I use KAIO under KSG.

For SRP by machine, I use either a light (no-cut) polishing pad or a fairly firm Finishing Pad. Most of the time I do it via Cyco and their white Finishing Pads (or at least the ones I have, they're pretty old) are a bit on the firm side.

The abrasives in SRP are *very* gentle; don't expect any correction from them.

Despite having abrasives and chemical cleaners, SRP can be layered IME if you wait a day and apply the subsequent coats *very* gently; that way the abrasives don't get worked enough to do the "self-stripping" thing. I know it sounds improbable, but it does work for me.

Note that I haven't tried the newest version of SRP,but I assume it's just like the older stuff that I have only more durable. I really do like SRP, but I just remembered that some people don't like its "oil paint" (turpentine?) smell. Makes me think of childhood art classes :D But some folks probably think it smells awful so YMMV there.

My mistake. I shouldn't have said, "waxes." The more appropriate word would be "product." - And you don't have to push the 476. B) I already got a tin from you. Yup, the good pre-VOC stuff. Ohhhh yeah. I also just placed an order a few days ago, and added KAIO, thinking that's a good choice and Accumulator-approved. :D

I spent the better part of my lunch hour, eating my salad, and going over this last post and what I want to do with Porsche (oh, and the owner, too!). Sometimes I forget these cars aren't mine.

I don't have Souveran, but do have Fuzion. That's the most top-shelf wax I own, but still haven't tried it.

Here's what the *owner* would like: durability! And something, hmm, strong(?) Even though it's PPG crazy hard clear, and it was tough to correct, he feels it actually mars/swirls/scratches rather easily. I saw it last Sunday, and this was maybe 7 months after the correction was done, and there are some minor blemishes now. The hood seems to be getting the worst of it. He also nicked a quarter panel, and left a small scratch the length of a pinky's fingernail. I gave him some ONR and taught him rinseless washing. Well, he saw me using the method and really took to it. He'd rather not do a regular hose wash, due to the age of the car, and he's worried about rusting. But from speaking to him, another *full* correction is not something he wants just yet. He still thinks it looks good, and is happy overall in it's present condition. His main concern is that small scratch, and is wanting to hide AND prevent future marring/swirls etc.

My thoughts are that I can hit it with an AIO, or maybe something with more filling ability. A durable AIO topped with a long lasting wax. Hence, the KAIO and FK1000p combo I noted earlier.

I wouldn't mind picking up the Autoglym SRP, but damn if this car doesn't have a boat load of rubber trim! And it stains fairly easily. Learned that the hard way.

I also have:
- Blackfire GEP
- BF wet over ice combo
- Poorboy's Black Hole
- HD Speed (though, i'm not really considering this for this particular application. I'm not looking at doing "correction" per se)

So SRP seems like it won't have a pleasant aroma. I don't mind oil paint (or art classes!) so much. Not everything can smell like cinnamon. hehe Love that stuff.

JustJEsus- If they still made 1Z WaxPolishSoft I'd use that topped with FK1000P. That's what I have on the (dark blue) '93 Audi, but AFAIK the 1Z WPS is off the market.

Eh, I'd do the SRP by hand and keep it off the trim, but that's just me.

Thanks for the chuckle, Accumulator!! By hand works for me!

I was recently looking for the 1Z myself. Didn't find it, but didn't try as hard as I usually do.
