1973 Alfa Romeo Restoration Project, Phase 1 10 Hours 90 pics

This is a 1973 Alfa Romeo Restoration Project.

Phase 1 was basically to restore as much as I could in the alotted time with the paint, chrome, engine bay, interior. However most parts are so old, faded and corroded that despite my effort they would just not be fully rejuvinated.

I spent 10 hours but need about another 10 hours to do a more thorough job on all the little parts. Most of this time was spent on removing overspray.

The car was repainted a year ago and in horrible shape. There was overspray on every part of the car the worst of which was on the engine bay and interior not to mention all top surfaces were horribly rough like sandpaper with overspray. The owner doesn't know anything about the paint other then what he paid and they really did a horrible job.

The process will be lengthy and I'll try to describe it as I go along in with the pics as well.

Process:

Dawn Wash 2 buckets

Top Scrubbed with brush and Convertable Top Cleaner

Entire car Clayed with Megs White Clay 4-5 times on top surfaces

All Chrome Clayed, Polished by hand with Blue Magic Metal Polish and after polished again with Turtle Wax Chrome Polish

Bumpers cleaned with 3M Adhesive Remover for overspray and then Mothers Back to Black

Engine Bay cleaned with Wash mitt and Dawn (I had to be careful as the age of the car and all the wiring and some open areas and such) then cleaned with 303 1:1 ratio on soiled areas, then 3M Adhesive Remover on all Overspray, then Zaino Z16 on all colored parts.

Paint was washed, clayed, Buffed once with the PC, LC orange pad with Meg's paint cleaner on speed 6 just to try to smooth off some of the rest of the overspray that didnt' come off with the clayign all to no avail.

After that once over with the Makita, LC orange pad with Men. PG at 1500 rpms. (I wanted to take it easy since I didn't know anything about the paint)

Finished off with the PC, LC orange pad with Men. IP at speed 6. It really needed another 2 x's with the Rotary, but I just didn't have time and he was happy with the paint after all that so we let it be.

Sealed with Zaino Clear Seal and Z8 topper. (I admit, I got lazy cause I was tired plus I can reseal it in my next few visits)

Rims washed and center caps wiped with Turtle Wax Chrome Polish.

Interior was horribly oversprayed and imbedded in the vinyl so it did not come off despite my efforts with 303 and 3M Adhesive Remover.

Interior was thoroughly dusted, floor boards were sprayed with 303 and scrubbed with a bristled brush to clean all the dirt out of the grooves, then wiped dry and vacuumed.

The rest of the interior was cleaned with 303 10:1 ratio.

The seats were lightly sprayed with 303 and scrubbed with brush, then vacuumed.

Per owners request I shined up the black dash and console with Zaino Z16. (I don't normally do this since it leaves a wet shiny look but the owner really wanted it to pop a little since it was all so horribly faded due to it's age.)

I may have forgotten something, but that's all I can think of off the top of my head.

This car had about a years worth of dust and powder on it inside and out, I went through about 20 MF towels cleaning the engine and interior.

So you ready for the pics, I hope you're not too disappointed.....at least the car is Italian and has the same Pininfarina logo on it as most Ferrari's do:woot2:

Here's my basic arsinal of supplies for on the road jobs.

You can see lights, camera, gatoraide, pads (on top of the shelf) and below are 3 buckets for washing, PC, Makita, vacuum, power cord, some interior cleaners, 6 buckets of compounds, zaino, MF towels, and washing supplies and "other" stuff....

So to start off with the engine bay.:scared:

Engine Bay cleaned with Wash mitt and Dawn (I had to be careful as the age of the car and all the wiring and some open areas and such) then cleaned with 303 1:1 ratio on soiled areas, then 3M Adhesive Remover on all Overspray, then Zaino Z16 on all colored parts.

here's some of the worst overspayed parts on the engine.

Stay tuned, next up interior.:scared:

Okay the interior was horribly oversprayed when repainted and bonded into the vinyl. Despite my best efforts I could not get the overspray out without risking perminent damage to the origional door panels so we decided to leave it be.

I'm sad to report that this would not come off without risking perminent damage to the dye and vinyl, the owner did not want to risk it, neither did I.

First up is the chrome fixtures. There were tons of them and most were pitted and corroded, but I think they cleaned up nicely.

Now onto the paint.

Paint was washed, clayed, Buffed once with the PC, LC orange pad with Meg's paint cleaner on speed 6 just to try to smooth off some of the rest of the overspray that didnt' come off with the clayign all to no avail.

If you're looking at these pics and wondering why there's a slight change in color, no it's not my skills at paint correction, I believe it is just the difference in outside lighting from the sun over the few hours, as you can see the shadow from the door is gone also....:idea

Here you can really see how dull and how much orange peel the paint has not to mention the overspray taking away from the shine.

All these before pics are after extensive claybaring.

Hope you enjoyed, thanks for taking the time to read my whole process.:)

Any questions and comments are welcome, please understand however due to the age of this car, many parts are faded and corroded and could not be fully restored....

Thanks,

Josh

Wow you did an amazing job removing all that overspray on EVERYTHING.

How do you like CS? I found a local reseller close to me and want to know if its worth it or if I should just stick with z5/z5/z8

Hell of a comeback . Can not understand the over spray inside the car. The paint shop sprayed with the windows down or worse with the door open ??? Anyway the car looks way better than before . Good posting . Thanks for sharing it .

Cheers , Jean Paul

You might want to invest in a mini powerball for chrome polishing. I did and it is worth its weight in gold. It will get out a lot more of the minor scratching/hazing that rubbing by hand just can't get out (plus it looks like it would fit perfectly in those door handle grooves!). Great job overall and quite a project you took on. I hope you charged heftily ;)

Outstanding turnaround on a badly neglected car. The "F" stands out for PininFarina, btw.

Thanks, I wasn't sure exactly.

I wonder why I see the PininFarina on the inside as well and not the outside?

I've seen some Ferrari's that have that insignia (on the inside of this Alfa Romeo) on the outer lower outside parts of the Ferrari. hmm?

I like it.

As I mentioned I got lazy and just did a quicky with the ZCS.

I typically use the CS over a couple coats of Z5, then once dry I hit it with Z8 over the ZCS.

I like it, very easy to use and only takes about 5-10 minutes if you're fast.

No joke, I don't know what was going on. He paid $2500 for the paint job, for that amount I would not have expected a show car shine, but at least expected better prep and taping things off....

I have one, but even the mini ball would not fit inside that small of a door handle.

This was really a phase 1 process to just clean it all up, I may go hit all the chrome again on my second trip and when I do the rest of his cars every other week.

Thanks,

Josh

I love those little cars. Great turn around.

And yes the "f" does stand for pinninfarina (this picture shows both together)

Nice, thanks, learn something new everyday.

I'm just starting to really learn and get into the Italian automarket.

I've got a Ferrari 328 coming up tomorrow that I'm sure I'll be posting up some pics about.:D
