Talk about a turnaround!!! I was really stoked on the way this car turned out. I was thinking I could make it look much better, but I wasn't expecting this, and neither was the owner, who may now be keeping the car instead of selling it! I really like single stage paint jobs. I dont like the fact I ended up doing this one for free, but hopefully the owner will send me some business and make it worth while! 15 hours total time invested, about $30 in product/pads used and thrown out...it cost me money to detail this one! Results were about 95%ish, some areas were pretty hacked up.

anyway,...I didnt want to use a rotary on this one as I didnt know how much paint was left (no PTG), so I stuck with a PC. The owner didnt remember when it was painted, or how much paint was laid on.

Process in order:

-wash with chemical guys wash and gloss to strip whatever was on the surface of the car (minus the oxidation obviously)

-PC/LC yellow cutting pad/megs 66 chemical cleaner wax to eat through the heavy oxidation

-clay with megs red clay with megs last touch 1:1

-spot compound deeper stuff with PC/lc orange 5.5"/M105

-PC/lc orange 5.5"/megs 83

-PC/lc white 5.5"/megs 80

-PC/lc blue/poliseal on paint and windows

-one grand chrome polish on all trim with PC/4" lc orange

-chemical guys barebones on tires

-megs glass cleaner concentrate

-megs 66 in door jambs

This was after just the PC/yellow/66 to remove the oxidation

The 289 is a small V8, the "three on the tree" is a manual three speed transmission with the shifter on the steering column.

toyotaguy, that was a wonderful save on the Ranchero! Just curious why this was a freebie? If I was the owner I'd be ashamed to let someone spend that much time on a vehicle I owned without paying something, especially with the way this one turned out.

Great turnaround. Is there a reason you used the cleaner wax before the clay bar? I have to do a single stage car soon and it has a lot of oxidation.

he is my manager at the restaurant I work for during nights...detail by day and serve tables at night = some long 15+ hour days, but it pays the bills until I can get more steady clients.

we talked about it and I wanted it for my new website coming soon. He didnt want to do it until next year for a price of 250 (still a huge hook up price - again, manager at work, has a family to support, not lots of money to throw around, remodeling his house on his own spare time, etc). Then I mentioned paying for products, but in the end, we just settled on he better get me some business...probably not going to happen, but the people I have showed the pics to seem to have a new respect for me, as well as detailing. They never knew something like that was possible, they all thought I painted the car, not detailed it...

so hopefully I get some credit and some more business from this one, both from him spreading word, and people understanding that this is the type of detailing i like to do.

in my opinion, its easier to clay the paint without having to go over the oxidation. I believe it saves the clay as it doesnt have to fill up with dead paint while trying to remove bonded contaminants. same reason why I removed the oxidation before compounding...didnt want to use up more compound polish trying to get through the oxidation to get to the paint...

megs 66 is a chemical cleaner wax - it will break down the oxidation while the cutting pad will cut it away and remove it
