#16 vs Klasse SG, which is more durable?

I'll be doing a 25' black hulled boat this weekend. I am kind of short on time(1day). I did AIO + SGx1 last year and it was a pain to remove the SG from this type of paint, I believe it's that emron paint?

Would AIO + #16 be a better combo? Easiser to use? More durable in salt water? I could also goto advanced auto and get Collinite insulator wax.

I really think I would need SGx2 to get the looks and durability I want, and I killed myself removing it last year. I had to go back in the morning to finish up.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Steve

I'll be doing my 26' Cabalt this weekend. I too used AIO and SG on the boat last year (by hand :wall ). SG was a pain in the a$$ to get off by hand. I resently purchased a PC so I will post the results sometime Sunday night. From what we all know from experience, if you apply too much SG its hard to get it buffed out. I'm going to use the PC with a SFX-3 finishing pad since I hear it will apply a more uniform layer. :buffing:

I have used SG quite a bit, I think it was a combination of things on this boat, the hull is painted, not gel coat, and I was in a rush. Once I let it dry overnight it was much better, but I don't have that time, and I heard it did not hold up as well as I thought. I applied it whisper thin.

Well if the boat is used in salt water that could be one of the reason the SG did not last very long. Also there could be other environmetal factors, oil or fuel in the water (very common around docks and fueling piers).

I keep my boat in dry storage, even with that being done I still swim around my boat and clean the hull with biodegradable boat/rv wash before its taken out of the water at the end of the day.

SHICKS- No experience with watercraft in salt water, but KSG has always proven much more durable than #16 for me. More so than Collinite too. But Collinite is a great compromise between ease of use and durability.

Thanks Accumulator-

I think that is what I was waiting to hear. I went to the store during lunch and picked up a few things. I Picked up Megs #10 plastic polish and is companion cleaner. Also Plastx, I'll try AIO first, then Plastx then if needed #10, but I am trying to save money so if AIO works I'll return the megs plastic cleaners.

I had my choice between #16 in 845 IW. I choose IW because it was liquid and says for marine use. I too believe the SG would last longer if I could get 3 full layers, but logistics just will not allow for that.

I just hope the IW will hold out most of the summer while it sits in salt water.

Well, we'll know how well it works by the end of summer :D Given how easy the 845 is to use, I bet you'll be pretty satisfied with it. By the time you're ready to do the LSP I think you'll be glad you don't have to struggle with that step.

Yea, you're telling me. The only thing I am doing prior is AIO and man, let me tell you, my pads were black, not from paint either, the scum that builds up on the paint.

Can 845 be layered? I may have one more day later this month where I can revisit this one? Also, does it stain trim or pourus surfaces. This boat has a barnacle paint on the bottom so if I slip a little I don't want white staining, othewise I'll have to use 50' of tape to mask it off.

Steve

I hesitate to say one way or the other on the trim as experiences always seem to differ on that one. I'd try a small area and see. Using a sorta W-O-W-O tends to help with that.

Supposedly you can layer 845. I'd go for it.

Of Course I could not wait to try 845 even though it is raining here in NH. I applied it to the trunk of my car. Tough to say if it hazed, but I wiped it off with ease, now the beading has started with the rain. hehehe. I can't wait to do that boat, I bet it will look good.

BTW, how do you remove 845 50/50 ISO?

SG would probably last longer but IMO, both #16 and 845 look better.

Thanks Scott-

I can hardly wait, the best part of the day is a 2006 Callaway Corvette Supernatural. I will get to drive it, but not detail it. This is my Dad's car and the dealer scratched it, so he is going to have them try to fix it first. We both know that they may screw it up, but better them than me. Once it is fixed, I'll detail it soon.

Steve

Here is the boat with 845 IW. 845 was very easy to use, and a little went a very long way. It gets very liquid once it warms up. I probably used 1-2 oz for the whole boat. The looks were great, fairly slick and hopefully it will last the summer. I may put another layer on in a few weeks.

The pic is not so good, but you get the idea.

oh and I used Megs Plastx on the windows, that stuff rocks, I had to follow up with AIO to remove the stubborn plastx film, but after that , they looked like there were 3 years old instead of 10!!!

Thanks for the help

Looking good, glad it worked out so well. What about the 845 getting on the black part you'd mentioned? Did you get it on there/did it stain?

Well as you can see, just below the silver water line there was some scum, so I was not really doing any harm if I slipped, but no it did not seem to dry white, but kind of make it look damp. I'll check on it in a few weeks. That part is underwater anyway, so no bigge if it is stained.

Accumulator- not sure if you caught the Corvette thread I created, but if you did not check out the horror show the dealer performed on the paint!!! :wall  :nervous:

I think I must've missed that one, I'll see if I can find it. If it was in the Click & Brag forum, well, I gotta admit I don't check out everything there.

Problems on a 'vette sound like work, the paint is usually pretty hard.
