15 Minutes with a PC

I user Menzerna. The Final Polish is about the equivalent to their Machine Glaze.. in other words very mild. Their Intensive Polish is a middle-of-the-line abrasive, like the 3M Rubbing Compound. If you need more abrasiveness then in 3M step up to the RC extra cut or menzerna has one as well, the only other offering of theirs. I think menzerna comes off easier, others have had the opposite experience. I think it's a matter of technique. I don't wait for the menz to get too dry.

Excellent picture and excellent work. Could you take a minute and describe the difference after using RC and before MG. Man I wish you had a picture so we could see what the RC did and what the MG did.

Thanks for your response

Okay... let's see if I can outline and answer questions in one shot :)

The first shot in the thread is after it has been washed, driver's side rear door (as I mentioned. Front door looked the same, as did the whole car, although I forgot to take a pic before I did it. Anyway...

I had experimented on the hood with yellow pad/PI-III and it still left some scratches that I felt could come out, scratches along the lines of the swirls, not some of the ones that won't come out without wetsanding.

So on this door I went with the wool pad that came with the PC, I think from Coastal Tool... although Zenhog could answer that as I bought it from him.

I applied the PI-III, just put it on the wool pad, and rubbed it on the door... working on about a 1'6" x 2' area (basically from the top of the plastic to the window, and from the front of the door to the front of the handle on a 98 Jeep Grand Cherokee)

I worked it until it was nearly dry... and wiped it off... it wasn't quite how you see it, picture about half as many swirls, but not as deep. I deduced I had been working on too large an area, not enough pressure/product.

Applied PI-III again cutting it down to 1'6" x 1' and applied a good amount of pressure and moved alternately between fast swipes, and slow. I was applying enough pressure to noticably slow the PC down, but not to just vibrating with no rotation (I worked with it on 6). Worked it to near dry, and wiped off.

I honestly didn't really look too close after this, and moved on to the white pad with MG... same process basically, except I slowed the PC to 5 and didn't apply as much pressure, slightly more than just resting it on the door.

I have since done the rest it, although only with the wool pad/PI-III combo. I will take a pic when my roommate gets back with his digicam. I de-badged and used just the wool/PI-III where they used to be as well... honestly, it looks nearly identical to the third pic I posted, I can barely tell a difference, although I'll check it out more closely when I get the digicam.

Things I learned:

1) PC is faster than hand

2) PC is slower than hand... you see a lot more imperfections when you use it... leading to more time spent getting them out... someday I'll add up the hours I've spent

(saw those first two somewhere else too... but thought I'd say them, as it's true :))

3) Yes, you can burn the paint with a PC

4) You only burn paint with strong products, in the right (or wrong rather  ) spots, and it's REALLY hard to do. Okay... it's easy to do if you're curious to the point of stupidity... (me) I'll explain with the pic after I get the digicam.

5) A lot of product is good... the PC works but utilizing the product and pad, not heat like a rotary (in addition to product and pad)

6) too much product is bad... too much product will waste your time, your product, spread too far, and dry out before you get to use it

7) If you are thinking about getting one... DO IT

someone is here.. finish this later

LOL, I did the same thing with the keyhole on my car. Right now I have one shiny one and one black one and it kind of sticks out since the car is black. I guess the only ting to do is buff off the other side so they look the same. Great work with the pc though, you wouldn't even think they were the same cars.

Michael, good job, but that before pic is inexcusable. You let your car get like that (especially I light colored car)?

excellent job though

I bought it 5 years into it's life :p

ugh... no time this weekend ... maybe hopefully do a little tonight before it gets dark and the bugs start attacking my light

That is amazing! Well done. I have a request... Could you take a picture of the car on a sunnt day and post it? I'd also like to know what 3M's part number is on your bottle of MG???

Ryan

Ryan,

Part number is 05937

Hopefully we'll get some sunny days this weekend. I'm not home during the day, so that's out, but first sunny day (with the car at least looking decent of course) I'll get a pic up for ya

OH MY GOD.

Can you list your steps/equipt used?

My Grand Cherokee has the same swirls.

And I haven't had any luck removing them.

that looks amazing, i just finished reading a link about how to use a PC (rough-guide that is!) and now feel a lot more confident about going out to purchase one. time to start saving the pennies and an empty garage because mine's packed full of rubbish :)
