15 coats of clear. Anything Special?

Hey guys,



I've just recieved a call about a car that has about 15 coats of clear on top of a candy apple red flake base with white pearl flames. What kind of products would bring out the shine in that bad boy?



I've got Klasse, Pinnicle, NXT, and other minorities. ;)

IMO i'd pass on the NXT. on some mettallics it tends to mute the flakes a bit. I think that Klasse would make the mettallic pop. 15 coats of clear is an expensive paint job. Make sure you're up to it.

Yeah skip the NXT, go the Klasse route, AIO SG then come back the next day and put a nuba on top.
 
15 coats of clear? Sounds like an inexperienced, unknowledgeable owner/painter.





Give it time...The clear will have more chips in it than my cookies I had tonite.

It may look nice, but over time (a year or two), it contracts soo much that it begins to chip and spider in certain areas. Talk to any experienced body shop about this. They highly suggest against it.



I, too, wanted this xx layers of clear when I had my car done, but my body shop told me they wouldn't do it because of inability to warranty it due to instability.

that depends on what type of clear you use... some do crack, some don't....



One of the best looking paint jobs I have ever seen had 30 coats of clear over dupont burple paint... it looked incredible. (burple changes from blue to purpleish depending on angle and light)



it was on a 86 chevy stepside. It still looks perfect and its been on there for about 3 years....
 
your probably right about 15 coats of clear being too thick-but-I've seen a red showcar 69 camaro with 5 coats of clear and the paint looked absolutely incredible
 
A standard paintjob has 3-5 coats of clear. From the 3 shops I talked to, they all reccomended against more than 5 coats.





In all honesty, that GTO doesn't look any better than a well detailed vehicle with 3-5 coats of clear, except that the surface may be smoother (less OP). I figure if I'd heard 3 places state this, there must be a trend with something wrong. I'd rather just have a well painted vehicle that's wetsanded.
 
Haha, oh well. I'm just detailing it. I couldn't care less how the clear coat itself turns out in 3-4 years. Thats his problem. :)
