$10k, most bang for the buck?

My wife liked it as a daily driver, but she has a higher tolerance for "track toy" attributes than many people.

Coincidentally enough, I have a mint original (~24K miles) '84 RX-7 GSL SE that would make somebody a swell toy *or* a nice daily driver...and I'd sell it for less than $10K too :D

Heh heh, yeah...I dunno how they sold any Bangle cars when there were older trade-ins on the lot!

Damn, an '84 GSL-SE with 24k on it! Some one out there wants that car.

Yep, in Columbus, Clintonville actually. Work downtown at AEP. MAG sure does charge a fortune. None of my cars has ever seen there service department nor has worn their parts! I use the OEM stuff, just not from them!

Very cool! I love Clintonville. The wife and I we enjoy going to Clintonville for Cafe Bella, Northstar, Gattos, Smackies, and the Community Market. Likewise, I am a huge Crimson Cup fan and I often find myself making a stop to get coffee when traveling through the city.

Ok, now back to cars. :)

Cool. As fellow detail and car nuts we should meet some time. I can always be found at gallos tap room after work. We are the perfect jump off point for taking the bus to Bucks events and not having to deal with traffic and parking. So feel free to park here. About five houses off of high and walking distance to the park

Anyone familiar with the A4 Quattro 3.0? Reliable? Is it fairly quick? Found one under 100k miles that has had all maint (timing belt etc) in this price range. It's an 02 6 spd loaded.

Finding a few older ones with the 2.7T (A6, S4) but I'm scared of those.

I think the 3.0 is known to be pretty reliable and decently fast. The 2.7 bi-turbo can be made to be insanely fast (11 second 1/4's are no problem with ~$5k), however, it doesn't make a good DD as they are pretty problematic.

"I came to a conclusion a long time ago - people who say "I am thinking to buy a B5 S4..." should pass on that. Only people who say "I want to buy B5 S4.." should actually get it. because "thinking" is a sign of a rational person - and there is no rational reasons for this car. it is a Russian Rullete on wheels with your wallet on the line. people who "want" the car - are irrational people. they want it regardless of reasons - it is a passion. like they say, "love makes u blind". apply this to this car. most of the owners on this board are irrational idiots - but we love our cars no matter what it will bring us tomorrow."

2002-2004 SVT Focus.

find one for 5-8k, then turbo the hell out of it.

do 150'ish MPH, while getting 25 MPG

Of course, owning 7 Foci (including 3 SVT's) my opinion is rather biased.....

The 3000GT was the slowest car in my driveway :)

yes, I owned 5 (the 5th one is at my engine builders house, getting a stroked out 4.6 dropped in it) at one time.

I am down to 3 now, lol.

You're crazy man, in an awesome way, haha.

I've had my SVT Focus for over 5 years now, I'm driving this thing into the ground

yeah, i get that alot when i mention I have owned 7 Foci.

But the SVT is really great, forged internals come stock, good for 350'ish whp, and fun as hell to drive, even stock, but they are just begging to get blown.

Mini Cooper S 6spd: What more can I say? Sex appeal, timeless looks, good aftermarket, good handling car out of the box, Supercharged, great gas mileage. Downside: Maintenance costs, make sure you replace those Run-flats with a good all-season/summer tire. They are noisy and very expensive to replace!

Youch! Bolded out important part.

For $10k you can have a 12 sec, under 75k mile (or right around), reliable, smoggable, and good handling car... that car would be a 98-02 Camaro/Trans Am LS1 (modded)

volvo s60R, with 10k and some slick talking you could be driving a damn nice car.

*300hp

*4 wheel brembo monoblocks

*awd(sorta)

*most comfortable seats your ***/back will ever grace

* awesome cruising cars

Of course I am partial....but how about a GS400?

Fun to drive, realiable and good bang for the buck.

There is a difference between fun to drive and nice to drive. LOL A GS400 is nice to drive...

S60Rs are also not so reliable and not so cheap to maintain. ;)

the stories of them leaving people stranded are very slim, the awd gearbox is the achilles heel of it, but they usually dont break unless it has been leaking.

and plus, he said he works on his own cars.

You don't want a $10k S60R...I had a very good $20k one and I left it after a year (all repair records thru reputable Volvo dealers, factory warranty, CPO...I searched for 4 months). It's a fantastic car but you don't want to be out of warranty with it. Unless you have access to the dealer software, very little can be done without a dealer at least reprograming something once a repair has been completed. Check out th R forum on swedespeed, search timing belt, radiator, struts, 4C, angle gear and peeling seats. A 10k S60 is a different story but it's also not as engaging. The S60 T5 is nice, has most of whats available on the R without the complicated suspension.

Miata hand down. Extremely reliable, very quick, tons of aftermarket goodies from suspension to turbos/superchargers/engine swaps. They take mods ery well. Check out flyinmiata.net and goodwinracing.com. Theres a reason so many of them have been turned into weekend race cars. I'm on my third, best cars I have ever owned.

I also vote for the SVT Focus. I had and SVT Contour and loved it but the reliability ratings of the Focus seem to be better and it's a much lighter car.

You're telling me, I'm scoping out parts for my turbo build as we speak :dance

Not sure what you consider fun to drive but a GS400 is definitely a lot of fun. IMO that good old low end torque gives a car big fun factor.

Maybe you think it is just "nice" but the low end torque of a GS400 is "fun" IMO.

Look, I understand you have a price limit but I highly recommend a Mark V GTI.

They are solid. 2.0T with the 6 speed manual will offer you plenty of moddable fun. For instance, a reflash of the computer alone will safely net you 50hp and 70lbs of torque.

Another car approaching your 10k limit is the 2004 Pontiac GTO. LS1 + Magnacharger = scary fun. You can also do a few mods like a cam, injectors and a tune for a considerable power upgrade while making the GTO sound absolutely deadly. A good friend of mine just bought one for 11,000 with only 50k miles. Hell of a deal.

Also, scottwax is dead on about the Nissan Altima. Those V6s are simply amazing, although wrong-wheel-drive torque steer can be a bit scary.

Good luck on your search.
