Disgusted with Tire Shines

The browning is actually a common misconception.

Search for Tire Blooming on google, here's a small snippet from CMA about it. But I know there are bigger articles. I'm sure it's been discussed here too.

Edit: For what it's worth, I didn't much like PB B&B, not that it isn't a great product.. it just didn't give me the longevity I want/desire.

I have a 32oz bottle of the stuff if anyone would like to purchase it :D

I was going to suggest Poorboys Bold and Bright. I could care less about how long the product stays on the tire. I am interested in buying that bottle.

I have been using 1Z Tiefenpfleger for about 9 months. It makes the tire look black and non glossy. Durability lasts me about 3 washes. With each wash it diminishes.

Just recently bought some PB Bold and Bright. I have not had a chance to try it yet.

I have had good luck with Megs Endurance (the matte not the High Gloss). If you go back and remove the excess 15 minutes after applying you eliminate the slinging. I've been thinking of trying 1Z Tiefenpfleger. I prefer the matte look.

Has anyone tried Shining Monkey? Some of the folks on solaraguy.com like it a lot. Looks to glossy to me, but that's why there are 50 or 100 different products! Here's their web site: http://www.shiningmonkey.com/

I think Im one of few people here that actually use this but I use the Tropi-Care Tire Dressing. This stuff is defintely not water based and goes on very thin with an applicator. It has great durability and even after it loses it's "bling" shine (Which isnt that blingish to begin with), the tires still look pretty good. Durability is a bit hard to determine tho. Everytime I think the tires need to be redone, I scrub them down and clean everything off of them. Then I realize how good they still looked with the TC stuff on them.

The stuff has no sling to it either. You put it on and wait for it to "dry" and you're good to go. I also use it on all my black exterior trim.

Steve was talking about changing the formula of the tire dressing a few months back. I bought a gallon of the stuff out of fear he would actually do it. Last I spoke with him, tho, he had decided not to change it.

Armor All has suprisingly good duratation. One of my customers was stunned to learn the protectant I used that lasted so long on his M3 was Armor All.

Clearkote's Tire Treatment is very durable but it does contain petroleum distillates. I get 4-6 weeks of decent looking tires out of it though.

Ok...I scrub my tires with a tire brush and the leftover car wash after I am done washing the rest of the car. When they are dry, I spray them with Armor All Detailer's Advantage Tire Foam (the only place I have seen this is WalMart). This lasts for a week or two, which is about when it is time to wash the car again. It's quick, does a decent job, the overspray is friendly to wheels and paint (although not your driveway, :wavey Spilchy!), no slinging.

I'm sorry, but I used to spend a lot of time with an applicator and a bottle of protectant (when Armor All was about the only one...sheesh, has it been that long??) , I just like this better. I mean, I like it enough that I haven't been tempted to try one of the products like Endurance. Am I missing anything?

Here I am all embarrassed about admitting to Armor All'ing my tires...and while I am composing my post Scottwax beats me to it, telling us it's his secret Bimmer detailing weapon! :D

Armor All and Eagle One Tire Swipes is my secret! :)

#40 is pretty good on the tires and exterior trim. Will be trying some PBs BNB when the #40 runs out.

Most of the tire protectants I've tried would wash away in the first rain until I used Meg's Endurance. I get a good two weeks out of it, even if it rains.

I think Endurance came out in about 1996-97, at the time I found it to be absolutely awful, not only did it wash right off in rain, made tires complete brown, yuck :down. I'm assuming the formula has changed? There's two versions: regular and high gloss, right? Which one are you using?

I have used Meg's Endurance and of course ArmorAll. Niether are bad products, IMO but both seem to attract a bit too much dirt and dust.

I've been quite satisfied with both the look and performance of PB's B-n-B on both the tires and wheel wells.

I did just add Tropi-Care's tire dressing to the kit. Steve demoed it for me at a car show, and it impressed the wife enough that I bought a bottle. It is not going to totally displace the B-n-B, but it will be added to the rotation.

I am using the High Gloss formula. I get no browning or sling but the tires don't have the tiny ribs in the sidewall.

Maybe that's the key. Are others who use the "original"/"regular" version getting the same good results?

I'm using the High Gloss version with good results. I do wipe it on fairly thin and wait for it to set for at least an hour (if possible) before driving the car. I find the extra wiping reduces the shine a bit and speeds drying -- thereby reducing greatly the slining some people complain about.

I hear this a lot. I would suspect whatever you used to wash the tires before you applied Endurance. This sounds a lot like blooming. Harsh cleaners strip away the waxes in the sidewalls that are designed to protect the tire from UV. They will migrate to the surface again the next time the sidewall is heated up from driving. Since it seems to happen after applying a tire treatment it will tend to get the blame when in fact it was probably due to the cleaner you used on the tire beforehand.

I'll agree with you regarding the tire cleaner and not the drressing is many times to blame. As I said in another post, I use Meg's Endurance. Works great and never had a problem with tires turning brown. Then once, I screwed up and left the tire/wheel cleaner on the tires too long. That resulted in definite 'blooming'. Nect time, did my normal tire/wheel cleaning rouotine and timing and all was well.

Hmm..

Although I wasn't quite as Autopian as I was then, I know for sure I didn't clean the tires with anything like Westley's. I think I may have been using the original EO cleaner then. Is this a definite characteristic of Endurance if the tires aren't cleaned with an optimum tire cleaner beforehand? A few other folks I spoke with around that time and since seemed to have the same trouble :nixweiss:
