Say you have an 8 year old car with 75,000 miles. Of course, the wheel barrels have never been cleaned properly. What is your process for removing the baked in brake dust?

I actually want to try the new Sonax wheel cleaner. I want to clean up my Dakota wheels. The video got me inspired. The last time was Optimum and a lot of scrubbing.

Media blasting will get you to a place where you can start.

Re-chroming, polishing, painting or anodizing will usually get you to a place where you can seal them up and be happy with the final result. It is difficult to duplicate that machined look.

1.) Soap & water to get the big stuff. 2.) Meg's Wheel Brightener (I do this w/ the wheels off the car, so I use it liberally and let it dwell, then agitate). 3.) CarPro Trix, which detars & seems to work on embedded brake dust (also, let dwell and agitate). Steps 2 & 3 can be repeated.

Patience. Car Jack. Jack stands. Lug wrench. Remove wheel. Well ventilated area. Camera. Nitrile Gloves. Iron X Paste (500ml). Foam Applicator. Agitate. Snap pics for the forum. Rinse. Repeat. Repeat. Persevere. When you start to see the end of the tunnel use a quality wheel cleaner to save some Iron X paste for the rest of the wheels. Then protect the wheels and don't forget to torque down the lugs to spec in a criss cross pattern. Don't worry, if someone's watching you put the tire back on they will likely remind you. It's human nature. Good luck!
