C6 Corvette correction.

I did this car last summer, but since I am new here I figured I would share this one with you.

I had my friend drop off his C6 Corvette for a much needed paint correction. The sad part about this whole deal is that he just had the hood and and new Z06 front bumper put on and painted. The actual paint work is nice but the shops finishing work IE wetsanding and buffing is absolutly horrible. I was shocked to see all of the DA marks from sanding still left in the clear coat. Not too mention how much they charged him and now he has to pay me good money to fix it. He already brought it back once and they still didnt get it right. Anyway on to the before pics.

My process for all the DA marks and heavy compounding was to bust out the rotary with a white wool pad and M105 and just get after it bit by bit. Checking my work as I progressed. Most of the DA marks I had to hit with 2000 grit and compound with the rotary. After the wool pad I stepped down to a yellow foam cutting pad with M105. Once completed with that I switched to my Shurhold DA polisher with a orange LC pad with the M105. I know most will think I could of gone right to the 205 from the yellow pad but I wanted to be absolutly sure that all swirls/hazing was gone. Once all compounding was completed. I gave it a wash and a careful towel dry. Polishing was taking care with a white LC pad and M205. Once completed I topped with a coat of Collonite 845.

Front bumper. Notice all of the sanding marks left in it.

More DA marks

Here is a couple after shots with just compounding with the rotary. No where near completed but you get the idea. Night and day so far.

Before shot of the door. No I did not sand the door. It was brought to me like that.

awesome job

sad that a body shop turns out work like that
but you made it look great again

Thanks for the compliment.

I totally agree with that too. It amazes me what passes for quality. Let's just say it turned into a big to do with the shop and myself.

Great job!

4 steps of polishing! I think you could have got away with the DA + orange/105 after wool, then M205. That would have eliminated a step.

Thanks for the compliment.

I had to refinish a Corvette (with Z06 editions) years ago and the bodyshop accused me of lying and doctoring photos to make their work look bad. The manager and I got into an argument, to the point I drove down there and showed them 4 cars that they had just completed and the terrible finishes on them. He said that was how they were supposed to look.

Pretty much what happened here. My buddy sent these photos to the shop as I discovered more stuff. He swore that they don't use a da to sand and buff. He kept saying he didn't understand why the owner bring the car back to fix it.

Very nicely done! Those were some major pigtails, but you removed them like a champ! Thanks for sharing and great job!

Great Job, night and day difference. It may be a dumb question but what causes the pugtails as I have seen that on a number of cars?

Not using a DA sander properly when doing a wetsand job. Usually it's caused from dirt caught in the sand paper or left on the surface of the paint. Thats one of the main reasons I personally dont sand with them. I just go about it with the block and hand sanding. Although if your not carefull the samething can happen but with deeper straight scratches instead of the pigtail motion of the DA.

Thanks for the compliments guys. This car ranks on the top 2-3 cars that I have turned around. The owner has brought it back since a couple of times for wash/wax and a wash/onestep/wax due to the car living outside.
