State of the Union Address

Hey Lou is that your doby? The GF has two rather large ladies haha one is 110 lbs and the other is around 85lbs. such sweet mushes they are :)

Syria's deadline to turn over all their chemical weapons is mid year. So far they have only turned in under 5% of thier stock pile. (ya couldn't see that coming)
Chuck Hagel said he is "concerned".

Didn't the prez use Syria in the SoTUS as an example of his great vision and leadership ??

You're obviously in the minority then. He didn't get elected twice by magic even though every effort was made to keep his supporters from voting.

Get ready for 8 years of Hilary pal.

I'd think you'd know better by now to start a political thread. This is going to turn ugly fast.

So, he was charismatic, said all the right words from a Teleprompter, and was calling for change....
Typical, perfect, timing for ANY candidate, right ?

Now, think about all that has transpired since the election, and ask yourself, are we, is this Nation, is the world better off???

Hillary?? Really??? Is this the same Hillary that went on record to Downplay Benghazi ??? Like the deaths and torture and mutilation of the American citizens there was nothing since it had already happened, and it was not a point of discussion any longer?? That Hillary???

Was that for voting the first , second or third time ? Seems some precincts in Philly had 105% vote for Obama. Hillary :rofl

This is a very interesting thread as are most threads dealing with politics. To answer Ron’s initial question, I did not watch the President’s State of the Union address. I frankly don’t like the partisan attitudes of either party. One party cheers and the other frowns over some innocuous statement.

At least Obama removed the troops from Iraq, found Bin Laden and was behind the repeal of don’t ask don’t tell. I believe the independent contractors in Iraq have taken the place of our troops and I’m glad the troops are back home. I’m tired of the U.S. being the world’s policeman. Yes, I am a veteran.

I remember Presidents back to Dwight Eisenhower and my least favorite would be Bush 43. I liked his dad, Bush 41, who had the good sense to drive the Iraqis’ back across the Kuwaiti border, and then stop, knowing full well Iraq would disintegrate without Hussein keeping the Sunnis away from the Shiites and vice versa. Throw in the Kurds and it gets worse. 43 didn’t listen to his Dad! Bush 43 conjures up a story about WMDs and invades Iraq. How is Obama worse than that? What did 43 do for us as a nation other than dump us in a recession?

Partisan politics today are the ruin of this country. If you want the backing of your party you have to toe the party line even if you don’t agree with the party platform. Disagree and your party will run somebody against you in the next primary. In my opinion this hold true for both parties.

Is there waste in government today? Absolutely and it’s the fault of both parties and the system in which they operate under pork barrel politics where they can add amendments to a bill that have absolutely nothing to do with the initial bill. There are tax and spend politicians in both parties. I believe in Workfare and not Welfare. I’m a supporter of term limits and having financial limits placed on campaigns along with a limit of how long a campaign can run. We elect our representatives for two year terms and the second year of the term they’re spending most of their time on the campaign trail.

I’m now retired and I invest in real estate and the stock market. There are comments in the thread that we are much worse off today under Obama than in the past. In January of 2009 when Obama took office the Dow Jones was at 9,034 and today it’s at 15,698 after a horrible January. Unemployment in January 2009 was 9.9% and today it’s at 6.7%. Can the unemployment figures be skewed? Of course they can as it may not reflect those not receiving unemployment who are not presently looking for work but they may have been skewed in 2009 as well. Yes, I am better off today than I was in 2008.

I consider myself a fiscally conservative Democrat married to an old-fashioned Republican in the mode of Dwight Eisenhower and Richard Nixon and believe it or not we agree on 80% of the issues. Why can’t Congress? The Affordable Care Act certainly isn’t the panacea we were told it would be but why do the House Republicans vote over 40 times to repeal the ACA when they don’t have the power to do so? That’s a waste of time and money.

I believe there’s a large percentage of the American public that would like to see congress work toward goals that can actually move this country forward. If Tip O'Neill could work with President Reagan why can't John Boehner and President Obama do the same? If there was a third major political party that put country first I believe many of us would join.

In general, I believe our economy is much better today than when Bush 43 left office. Am I a bleeding heart Liberal? Not hardly, I voted for Nixon - TWICE!

Fiscally conservative Democrat? That went out with JFK.
I don't think Nixon suggests conservative cred either.
Nixon signed off on more entitlement legislation and grew the federal govt. more than our Great Society president.

I wish I could say that my wife and I agree on 80% of stuff. Im a conservative and she is very liberal. We don't agree on much lol.

To quote the great philosopher Popeye "I yam what I yam". I don't believe in government waste or is that only something only a "conservative" can believe in? I've been working since I was seven years old and was able to retire debt free at age 59. Let me give you an example of my personal financial conservative nature. Years ago I re-financed my home when interest rates dropped and the loan officer couldn't believe I didn't want to take out additional cash since the equity in my home was so high. I told him I didn't need any additional money - only my interest rate lowered. My God, did that make me a conservative Republican or just a wise money manager? If the government managed their assets and money like my wife and I do the country would be much better off. We're invested heavily in real estate, as well as the stock market, and don't owe a penny on any of the eight properties we own. Just because I've voted for Democrats don't think I don't know the value of a dollar and how to make it grow. You may think there hasn't been a fiscally conservative Democrat since JFK but we're out there.

I don't follow any strict party line as I will vote for, in my opinion, the best candidate for the office. I voted Republican for Washington State Governor and county commissioner and Democrat for President though I'll be truthful and say I probably vote 65% for Democrats. Does that make me an irresponsible tax and spend Liberal? My wife voted for a Democrat for the first time when McCain ran for President. She wasn't worried so much about McCain but had her doubts about his running mate and a very conservative party platform. I asked her if she had left the Republican party and she said "no, the party has left me". She votes about 65% Republican now.

Did I say Nixon was a "conservative"? No, he was a "Republican" like Eisenhower and Reagan. None of these Presidents would even be allowed to run for office in the Republican party today as they aren't "conservative" enough. Reagan initially cut taxes dramatically but over the course of his presidency raised taxes eleven times. Eisenhower was responsible for the interstate highway system and warned us of the military industrial complex and Nixon was the prime force behind the EPA. Todays conservatives would find the actions of those men appalling.

Even John McCain isn't considered "conservative" enough for the Republican Party in Arizona.

Personally I would benefit more financially from the conservative programs than the more liberal based programs but there's a part of me that wants to see the single mom with three kids helped until she can get back on her feet. I believe we need to help those that can't help themselves and for them I'll gladly pay my fair share of taxes. I don't support welfare for people who don't want to work.

As far as political parties go I'd like to see the right wing conservative Tea Party folks form their own party and give back the Republican party to people who can work with the Democrats to make this a better nation. Who knows, maybe I'll vote Republican again if another "Eisenhower" runs for office.

Look, I know I'm not going to change anybody's mind concerning politics and frankly I hope that everybody who comments in this thread is successful in their life and business and continues to vote for the party or person they deem most qualified.

Sometimes voting for someone belonging to the party you don't traditionally identify with can have unintended consequences.
I consider myself a Friedmanite/classical liberal/conservative/whatever.
Years ago when my father was alive we were watching TV and there was some democrat running for Congress who seemed like he was making a lot of sense.
Dad agreed but warned if he got elected, Charlie Rangel would chair Ways and Means.

The moderate Republications and the Blue Dog Democrats are the ones that have disappeared as the Congress has been more partisan. These were the swing votes that often helped pass bills in prior Congress so now we have little done except constant posturing in preparation for the next election.

Please note the NFL is a non-profit organization thanks to Congress.

It's funny, I don't know (personally) anyone who voted for O. and he appears to be wildly unpopular, but he still managed to get elected twice.
I don't blame the people who don't have or don't want a job voting for him, but anyone who has a job or wants one and voted for O. should be ashamed of themselves.

Interesting, but this is my experience as well. I would say maybe 5%-10% of the people I know actually voted for him, and most of them apologize for it now.

I have been watching this thread, thank you everybody for expressing your opinions in a respectful manner.

Not really. It never ceases to amaze me how many people don't know anything more than something they heard, and then repeat it as rock solid truth.

As far as 8 years of Hillary, well I'm not much of a fan, but so far there is nothing cohesive in the republican party, And IMHO ANYTHING HAS TO BE BETTER THAN 0BAMA. (at least as far as I can see at this moment (except of course biden)

Contrary to belief, Obama didn't get Osama, the SEALS did. I will give credit where credit is due though, he did allow the operation to go forward. But AlQueda still exists, and so does terrorism.............
