Wife's 2007 Nissan Murano

Well I wasn't sure if I should really start this thread yet since I will be working in multiple stages when I have the time but I figured I should get it out there while everything is fresh on my mind. Plus this will probably keep me more motivated. *Warning* This will be a slow thread since I can only work on it weekends. My wife is working 2 jobs during the week and so that puts me on daddy duty (2 year old) once I get home from my regular job.

Vehicle: Black 2007 Nissan Murano. Mission: minor paint correction (swirls and light scratches), glaze, seal and wax. I had always taken basic care of it with a couple clay's and wax's a year but the swirls have really been driving me crazy so now is finally the time to take care of them and not just temporarily with fillers.

Skill level: I guess I will say beginner. I have been detailing my own cars for years and doing close friends, co-workers and family cars starting this year. All those were nothing more than basic wash, clay and wax jobs though. Actually I'm not sure if I can really call that detailing without any paint correction can I? I will most likely be inserting a couple questions throughout the thread if I have any but feel free to chime in with any advice at anytime. Upon starting I realized my lighting is terrible so that will be on the list of soon to come. As of now I only have a few florescent fixtures and a craftsman florescent lamp to try to get a closer look.

TL;DR - Never done a paint correction and my wife's ride is a mess. :D

I was supposed to start Saturday 8/17 but car needed it's first smog and I wanted to get that knocked out before cleaning up the Murano. Unfortunately the shop didn't open until 8 a.m. and by the time I got home at 9 a.m. the sun was already high in the sky and heating up. So worked on the interior and pushed off exterior till the next day. Even starting at 7 a.m. Sunday it started to heat up fast here in Southern California.

Wheels and tires cleaned first with 3D products orange citrus greaser in 5:1 ratio. Left to dwell for a minute or so it broke up brake dust fairly well but took some serious scrubbing for the inside stuff that has been caked on for a while.

Car was washed using CG Extreme Body Wash and Wax in a Gilmour Foam Master II. No dilution's given on CG directions so I did a rough 10:1 ratio and it seemed to work perfect and only used about a 1/4 of the solution on the 1oz/gal. setting. Two bucket wash method and dried with CG extra large waffle weave.

Some pictures of swirl damage after washing......

Then on to clay bar. Using CG blue fine grade clay and CG clay super lube. Scent of the lube was pretty good but got a little overwhelming after a while with poor ventilation. All good after I brought a fan out. The clay bar itself isn't as pliable as the OTC meguiar's and it was a little too fine for the surface I was working with. First run over the hood with CG blue clay plastic baggie test, failed horribly, second time over the hood with meguiar's clay, better but still failed, third run again with CG blue clay B+ and moved on. With my hand it felt amazing but could still feel a few contaminates under the bag. Finished the rest of the car with one pass Meguiar's clay and a follow up pass with CG clay.

Would iron-x take care of this problem? I have been wanting to try it out but had to pick up some other supplies first.

First time polishing so I didn't want to start with anything too aggressive but I may have been able to a little more. Started with 6.5" Orange Hexlogic on HF 6" Orbital DA. I have applied wax with this machine many times but quickly realized for polishing I really need a 5" backing plate and a 3" polisher to make my work a little easier.

Pad was primed with 4 pea's of HD UNO followed by 3 pea's of UNO and a spritz of CG Extreme Slick Detailer. Cross hatched for a couple passes and wiped clean quick and easy. I repeated this step one more time and didn't get as much cut as I was hoping for. So I'm wondering with the little scratches that are left should I try a MF pad with UNO? More aggressive polish? or fill them with glaze since they aren't very noticeable and lots of progress made?

Also tried out the finish polish. HD Polish on White Hexlogic pad. Twice over on test spot and got some heavy dusting. I think I may have over worked it too though. Work time was almost half as quick than with the UNO. Here is the first test photo's. Like I said though, horrible lighting, bad background and a lot of chips in the hood haha.

Moved on to the roof after that, sorry no pictures and then my wife was kind enough to bring me out a sammich

Even have drain holes for when washing the car and helps them dry out a little quicker

Okay back to work! Was able to finish off the driver side of the vehicle before having to stop early for smoked brisket at the in laws. After pulling the car out into the driveway though there were a couple small areas I wanted to go over again. Here are some full sun reflection shots.

And an area I'm not particularly happy about.....was wiped down a little after the picture since I left a small smudge while examining it.

I know I should have tried to get some better angles. I will work on that next time since there is still a ton of work to do. Thanks for looking and tolerating all my rambling. Again I am open to any suggestions and criticism's. Just don't be too harsh on me!

Matt.

Results look great!!! I'm assuming your using a DA when you say polisher?? Just a couple of quick thoughts--HD polishes seem to work best with flat pads and it's definately not recommended to spritz the pad with detail spray.

It seems like your not using too much product (less is more with HD) and you certainly aren't doing allot of passes so I can't understand why your getting any dusting at all. I've done six passes with HD Polish and not a speck of dust. Where you working in the sun or was it really hot and humid? In those cases you can use more product.

Thank you! Yep. I always call it my polisher around the house so my wife knows what I'm talking about.

I have some other pads that are flat that I will give a try. I thought a small spray of detail spray would give me a little more work time with the polish?

I was in the garage but it was really hot and I tried to make sure that the fan wasn't pointed to where I was working and it was pretty humid. So how much more polish when it is hot and humid? Paint surface was cool too.

So back at it this weekend. Put in a good 10 hours on Saturday and another 8 hours yesterday with water hitting the car both days right around 6:15 am. I wonder what my neighbors were thinking seeing me out there both days that early washing the car.

Soundtrack for the weekend was a long one but what the heck, I wouldn't mind seeing what you guys listen to for calming down or getting pumped up for a long job so here is mine.

Ludovico Einaudi - Islands Disc 1 and 2
Stevie Ray Vaughan - Texas Flood
Pennywise - Full Circle & Land of the Free
The Black Keys - El Camino
John Mayer - Continuum & Paradise Valley
Daft Punk - Random Access Memories
The Doors- Strange Days & The Soft Parade
Cat Steven's - Greatest Hits
And the local country station.

Saturday
So got out early and washed the car. I had only polished the hood, roof and driver side of the vehicle last week so my goal for Saturday was to finish polishing and go over the driver side rear quarter panel again. I now know why everyone has such a big stock of pads! I knew I needed more but decided to save a few dollars and just clean the pad off as I went. Unfortunately the pads were caking fast so I would clean them after each pass and the performance really started to decline even after cleaning them up a little. Once again the HD Uno cut fairly good when the pad was fresh and had a decent work time but I think I need to compare with some more pads and polishes to really see how effective it was. HD polish looks really good once cleaned up but still a really short work time even when increasing the amount of product I was using and still MAJOR dust. I wiped most of the dust off but decided to leave whatever was left behind since I knew I would be washing it again the next day.

I did find a couple pictures of the spoiler from last week...I wish I would have gotten some better finished angles and wiped off the dust more. There were still some deeper scratches left after I was done but overall I'm really happy how well it came out.

Sunday
Washed the car first thing but had gotten a little side tracked after drying when I noticed a new gopher hole's in my lawn  I tried to flood him out for a few minutes (worked for me last time) but then decided I needed to get back to work. Pulled the car into the garage and gave it a 30/70 spray down of isopropyl alcohol and distilled water and then got to taping.
After the car was taped up it got a hand coat of CG EZ Creme Glaze. That stuff smelled amazing. I was going to pick up a good sealant last week but I decided I wanted to test the life of the gallon of CG- Top Coat Seal & Wax that I have since I will be putting that on all my little side work for family and friends. Top Coat Seal and Wax was applied with a Chicago Electric DA (HF special) on a black hexlogic pad. It went on really smooth and wiped off extremely easy. Hopefully it lasts! Final wipe down I used CG - P40 Detailer. Next week I plan to fully finish by pulling off the wheels and getting them all cleaned up and sealed as well as do all the trim work and a coat of CG Butter Wet Wax and eventually the headlights need some minor work. The outside lighting wasn't the best when I finished up but I got a few pictures of afterwards as well as a couple this morning.

I swear I'll try to get some better pictures by next weekend lol.

Wow excellent turnaround (so far). I really enjoyed reading the thread. Maybe the reflection will scare away the gopher? :yourrock

Thanks guys. Unfortunately the reflection did not scare the gopher away lol I found a new mound this morning.

mnehls86--Here's a youtube video of Barry Theal usning HD Cut and Polish on a black hood in the sun https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WN-CCLWcN1s In the garage I've seen no dusting with HD Polish.

Thanks for the video. I don't know why it never crossed my mind to look up some more videos for the HD products. A couple things I noticed....
1) I worked a bigger section for longer and it never felt like I needed to re-activate the HD polish until it was too late. Should finishing polish ever be re-activated or just quick on and quick off like he did?

2) He seemed to be running the HD Polish at a slower speed maybe around 3. Directions say 5-6 with a DA but I will try to work a smaller section, at a lower speed for less time next time.

3) I did use less product then he did even when I increased the amount.

I didn't follow your advice. I really thought I had some clean flat pads that I wanted to try out but I guess I misplaced them. I know I have some but after a couple minutes of searching I gave up on looking. I'm glad you are getting on me about this though because now I really want to give it another shot. Looks like I might have to do at least a couple panels on my beater this weekend too :D and I WILL find those pads before then.

Well I have been lagging on the update since I have been working some long hours and there isn't too much new to tell. The weekend before last I removed the wheels from the car and cleaned up the inside with some SONAX Wheel Cleaner Full Effect This stuff exceeded my expectations on it's ability to clean and how easy it was to use when it comes to scrubbing. I sprayed it on, let it sit for a couple minutes and just lightly agitated the insides of the wheels and all the caked on brake dust and tar spots came off very easily. Unfortunately I was a little behind schedule for the days events so I didn't get any pictures of cleaning the wheels.

Car was then washed, dried and put a layer of CG Butter Wet Wax on top of last weeks coat of CG top coat sealant & wax. I also decided to try out the CG top coat sealant on the wheels. I thought that with the heat from the brakes that it wouldn't last at all but to my surprise it held up really well and made my wheel cleaning last weekend a breeze. There wasn't much brake dust on the wheels but it all came off with no effort and water beads right off.

Unfortunately a couple things happened to the car.
1) A couple decent size chips in the paint - either I unknowingly bumped the car with something, which I would think is highly unlikely since I am so careful and I would have noticed anything hard enough to chip the paint like this. OR someone hit the car with something either at my wife's work or the grocery store.
2) I inspect all my MF towels after washing and again before using and if they hit the ground then I put them inside for house cleaning. But something did put some light swirls back in the paint. I'm kind of wondering if it is from my CG waffle weave towel so I just ordered a Cobra Supreme Waffle since people really seem to like them and I ordered a few new MF towels.

Here are some pictures.......

I love early morning shots
