Cold here in Iowa

Just joined, looking for information to protect my chrome rims through the winter. I can't convince my wife that spending $500 for winter rims and tires is a good idea.

A quick and easy option is to use whatever wax or sealant you are already using for the paint. But you may need to re-apply it once a month or so based on durability.

On of my favorite wheel sealant is BF Metal sealant. It is easy to apply and remove and it lasts. It is specifically made for metal parts like wheels and is also made to handle the high temps from brakes and exhaust.

welcome to AF. it's a chilly 59 degrees in the tampa bay area of florida now. it actually dropped to 40 degrees last night.

:welcome:

Iowa gets snow and where there's snow there's sand and salt.

If you're looking at real long term protection spray them with a rust inhibiting product. They'll look sort of like crap but they'll be protected. If it's for looks a quality sealant or a coat of Collinite 845 is the ticket...:bigups

We're under a foot of snow where I am at and the roads suck. I usually either wax mine or from what I learned here, sealed them with BF Crystal Seal.

Welcome to Autopia Forums. I agree with Troy. You can't beat BF Metal Sealant. It should give you all the protection you need.

I used FK1000p high temp wax on the car and when I was done I put a coat of the stuff on the rims. Next Spring after it warms up I am switching to UPGP on the wheels and glass so I can use it up.

I heard a storm moved through you state recently. We got hit with a wet on back in early October and that melted but we haven't had much lately and only about 6" on the ground now.

Dean.

Not many areas using sand anymore. (epa decided it's a pollutant)
But yeah the 845 is pretty hard to beat. Just don't give it "a heavy coat for winter"

Bob, I'll be thinking of you when it warms up here.

FK 1000 pretty good too

Thanks for the advice guys, I'm in the very northwest corner of Iowa, in Hull. Not a lot of snow yet, but it always comes.
Blackfire Crystal Seal looks like something I could try and its relatively cheap.
I read a lot about Opti Coat, that also sounds promising or would that just be overkill?

Opti-Coat is great for wheels. It makes cleaning them simple with only needing soap and water.

Unless you have a heated garage to work in I would suggest waiting on Opti-Coat until the spring or summer. There is a good bit of prep and time needed to do it properly. But once it's done you will say it was well worth it.

Nw that I have done some of my Wheels with Opti-Coat I will continue to do so on any and all new wheels.

PA is getting hard. dicey ride home last night. 50mph winds and blowing snow. gotta go in today too. looks like no detailing for awhile. hope all that BLACKFIRE on the xterra earns its keep!

for sure. hit the wheels with any good sealant or wax you have on hand for now.
