Some help needed

Hello everyone. Currently working on my buddies 2008 BMW 550i Black (soft paint?). Has 91,xxx on it and the paint had lots of swirls/scratches on it.


This is our progress so far to what we have done to it...

Dawn washed the car (just in case the dealer threw on some glaze or something)

Clayed it with Meguiar's white clay. (The hood and top of the car was severely contaminated)

Hit it with M105 (LC CCS Yellow) (removed about 90% of the swirls/ light scratches)





Then we polished it out with Menzerna SIP-1500 (White pad).
Upon inspecting the results, we found some holograms swirl marks on it at an angle. (This is on the hood only...We think the hood has been replaced/repainted)

We switched to Orange (still using the SIP) and it was still there.

Our pads were pretty cleaned and we cleaned it frequently.

Couldn't figure this one out, so we continued.



After, we used Menzerna SF-4000 (Grey). Wow, this really bling'd it out for us.

Still, we can see the holograms on the hood again...

What can we do?


Also, my next step would be the Wolfgang's Deep Gloss Paint Sealant 3.0 topped with Pinnacle Souveran Liquid Wax.

Another questions...would it be a good idea to throw in some glaze before the sealant or it's just a waste of step? (If so, what would you recommend?)

:inspector: I was also thinking about maybe doing another step of the SF-4000 (before the LSP) but with the Gold pad this time with a speed of 3 or 4? Would there be any benefit from it? (keep in mind, I also have a M205 laying around)
 
OK, I don't think the Menz SF-4000 on gold will remove the hologram.

Personally, I prefer removing defects. With what you've described, I might try SF-4000 on white to remove the hologram. Use speed 4 and work it until fully broken down. Depending on the resulting finish, you could follow with same on black.

After you get the hood to your satisfaction, carefully wipe it down with IPA or Eraser.

Glazing prior to sealing or waxing will add gloss but is not a requirement. I definitely like Prima Amigo.

Note - it could also be that you haven't compounded hologram out.
 
Washing with Dawn should work.

Of course you could go to Walmart or the drug store and get IPA. Cut it 2:1 with distilled water, mist and wipe with soft MF.
 
don't forget to concentrate on keeping the pad flat on the paint surface while polishing. sometimes it's easy to rock the pad on it's edge and create some more work for yourself. :)

Got it! :yay:yay after we followed it with black it went away a lot, but there were still some...not as much though. :D

Finally done! Well, we plan to add another coat of WGDGPS 3.0.
Here are some pics of the first coat (cured for 12hrs)

After the 2nd coat, we will follow with the Pinnacle Souveran.















After the first coat of the paint sealant, wow! Made it look pretty wet.

Great job! Glad it worked out.

On soft paint, you might need something in between SIP and 106FA. Menz 203 and Optimum HyperPolish are my favs.

I went ahead and used the white pad, with the SF-4000, like mjlinane suggested, it did remove somewhat of it, not much. After I followed it with a gray/black pad. It helps, but you can still kind of see it if you really look super close. But it looked a lot better.

Hmm...I might look into that. I'm guessing it would refine it a bit more, giving it more clarity?

I think you are interpreting the chart wrong. PO203 has slightly less cut than SIP but finishes a bit better - closer to what 106FA or 85RD can finish. 85RD is their super fine finishing polish (has the least cut but offers the most gloss). Pure black paint tends to need it. Note - every paint is different all of the above can vary. This is how I justify to myself owning every polish ACC sells. ;)

The idea is that each step needs to be able to remove any marring that the previous might have left. Soft paint - especially black - can make this difficult.

Okay, so pretty much, since it's soft paint, I could have done...

M105, PO203 and 85RD (from the looks of it) (With less cut) :redface:
or even PO203/85RD dropping the M105.

Correct. If I do a 3 step, the former is one of my go to combos.

The other thing you can try is using MF Cutting pads. Depending on the paint, M105 + MF Cutting pads can eliminate the middle step (turn it into a 2 step).

As you know, these pictures doesn't really show the true shine of it like the naked eye.

Here is a video...It's bad...but I tried.

 
That looks great. I prefer finishing on a DA polisher with a white pad (vs. gray).
Either ways it looks like you got it figured out in the end. :bigups
