Product Review: Poorboy's Spray & Rinse Wheel Cleaner

Are spray and rinse products more aggressive on the wheels than say a wheel cleaner like P21S gel? I would love to spray and rinse but I fear damaging the clear coat, the caliper paint and the rotors and pads. Are my concerns legit or unfounded specifically with the pb line. I like a lot of there products. I never tried their wheel cleaner because years ago used another over the counter wheel cleaner on a BMW wheel and the clear coat hazed. It was my car and I replaced the rim. BMW recommended the p21s and I never strayed for fear of ruining the rim. It may be time to experiment. And long term ill effects from the spray and rinse? With my car I can usually get away with soap and water unless they get really bad if I get too busy to stay on top of them.

I will PM Pockets and see if he could enlighten us.

I have not used P21S wheel cleaner and cannot speak as to how strong it is so Ill give you the S+R side :)

We have not had any complaints of S+R damaging the clear coat on rims (in fact we have sprayed it on paint with no ill affects)

There are a lot of BMW people that we sell them too because they always have such elaborate rims with lots of little areas you just don't want to scrub lol

I will say that you should not use S+R on clear coat damaged rims, because it will oxidize the under metal and make the CC failure worse, or uncoated rims like polished aluminum. It will not ruin them it will just make them oxidize and you will have to polish them out.

Hope this helps and I would give it a shot on your rims it really is a great safe product when used right :bigups

Unfounded.

Hi Jeff.

And you know ive used both. and you know im lazy, but not at the expense of my cars

Todd...the more that you use PB line the more your going to see this guy is no joke, his products do what they are suppose to with no issue.

Dave,

After spending Saturday and Sunday at PoorBoy's World Weekend 2012 and really using some of Steve's products I have to agree completely.

While PoorBoy's World warehouse is a bit on the small side and could use some organizational mentoring, the line of products not only work they work very well! :bigups

Nice review Todd. I have been using Poorboy's World Spray and Rinse wheel cleaner as needed since I first tried Poorboy's World products way back when. Honestly I have never found a need to experiment with any other wheel cleaner since the day I started detailing cars. I had however stumbled upon a general degreaser that is an alkaline based citrus product that has become a staple in my pre clay, wash and prep procedure. This stuff cleans the wheels, wells and severely neglected paint very well. It takes care of most of the brake dust on cars that aren't severely neglected. When I do get a car with the stubborn baked on brake dust all over the wheels, I go through my normal prep/wash routine and then come back to the stubborn baked on brake dust with Poorboy's World Spray and Rinse wheel cleaner mixed 50/50 with water. I give the wheels a light spray and also add a spray or two to my soft bristled horse hair parts cleaning brush. I lightly agitate the baked on brake dust and allow the wheel cleaner to dwell for a few more minutes ensuring that the wheel stays wet with product, then pressure rinse the wheel to a perfectly clean condition.

Often times I would pull the car in the shop to do the rest of the prep work and paint correction and I could still smell the Spray and Rinse while working on the car. Coming from a chemical manufacturing background I know that an alkaline will neutralize an acid. Each time I use Poorboy's World Spray and Rinse wheel cleaner, the last thing I do before putting the pressure washer away and pulling the car in the shop is to give the wheel, the tire and the caliper/rotor a light coating of my alkaline cleaner and rinse. Since using this method of residual acid neutralization, I have never smelled the wheel cleaner again while working on the rest of the car.

I would discourage folks from spraying all for wheels at a time and encourage dealing with one wheel at a time because I have allowed this product to dwell for too long of a period on a few occasions and each time I allowed that to happen, I lost hours of time having to polish off the resulting clear coat etching that occurred on the wheel from the product sitting on the wheel too long. This happened on cool wheels.

I love this product and will continue to use it for my detailing needs into the future but will warn that this is a professional grade product that can and will cause damage if not used properly. To say any less would be a liability.

Thanks for the review.
