Why can't we sell stuff on here?

Hey, so I don't know if this has been covered so I apologize, search didn't really come up with anything.

Why can't we sell stuff? Why just swap? I feel like swapping is harder than plain selling! I have a bunch of stuff I'd rather not return because of how much shipping would cost me... and I'd rather sell it to people who will use it!

I recommend Ebay or Craigslist.

The Forum Rules DO refer to "purchases between forum members" .....

All trading and purchases between forum members are the sole responsibility of the parties involved. Autopia Forums is not responsible for disputes between members regarding bad transactions. Trade or purchase with caution.

I would wait for one of the Moderators to clarify the rule.

You really can't blame autopia for having that rule, I'm sure if I owned a forum and sold stuff from it, I wouldn't want people selling stuff to other members because for 1, you don't know how out of date the product is, or if something else got mixed in with it, or how it was stored. Not only does it give autopia a bad name but also the companies that autopia deals with one too. That's why we discuss products on here so everyone can see how they are without having to buy them. And hey, at least they give us a little slack and let us trade stuff on here.

I remember this being discussed when they first added the classified section, and as far as I know its mostly for the same reason there was no classified at all when this was Detail City. People buy something and never get it, or a buyer backs out, and they expect the mods to do something about it. I too would love to just buy or sell outright, and I have a few times, but in the privacy of PMs or emails. I'm just thankful to have a classified section at all, and we can thank Todd for that.
A motorcycle forum I frequent gives members a place to buy/sell, but you have to have over a certain amount of posts first. This keeps the spam and profiteering to a minimum, and those who do make it through are flagged immediately by members and banned. Members also have an iTrader rating which is just like your eBay feedback, and if you have a couple bad marks on your rating people can refuse to do business with you. Its really a good system.

This has been discussed several times and this response is pretty much spot on. It has been tried on at least two occasions before the name change and there were some issues. It seems like no matter how many times you say that AF (then DC) has no responsibility in the transaction people would look to the forum for recourse when problems arose. This lead to name calling and character assasination within the forum. One time in particular it was an honest mistake related to the shipper but by the time it was straightened out, the damage had been done. This topic was brought up on the forums within the past couple of months and administration (above my head) took a look at it again. For the time being it was determined that we are still a trade only forum.

May I ask for the link where you pulled this text? We apparently have more than one copy of the rules existing on the forum.

Thanks guys, I'll see if we can't get these pages to read the same way. Actually, I'll need to have one of the Admins do it.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention (regarding the rule copy).

The rule has nothing to do with sales being made because we sell products (frankly the volume of sales on this forum wouldn't compete with the large volume that Autopia currently sells), it has everything to do with past experience.

Twice this has been done and twice those wronged looked to the forum (now the store) for retribution. It can be something we look into in the future.

Given how many of us asked for trading and then when it arrived it was not used much, I do not think there is any crisis that needs addressing. I think people can use their own judgment and not get the 'store' involved by sanctioning to much.

sales happen regardless of the site and the rules. however there is always a bad experience due to user or shipping company and most jump to conclusions and bring it to the forums when its between member A and member B not the forum and it should stay that way. if you sell or trade its on the users anyone who looks at the mods for help really needs to rethink what their doing. when doing trades, never expect the other person to come through. if you think this way usually you dont worry or care that someone didnt send their end because you expect it to happen. then when the package arrives its even more exciting because you did not expect it to come. sure people should hold true to their word but some dont and could care less.....so all in all just do trades at your own risk and dont expect anyone to help unless another person got ripped off by them, and surely dont bring it to the forums. be paitent and wait for the other party to respond before jumping to conclusions, sure some are there just to rip others off but some are there to trade products they dont use for ones they will use and everybody is human, everyone has a real life and sometimes that takes over and you forget about online happenings like sending a package.
