Note to self: Dont' leave windows open with unfinished popcorn ceilings.

New construction contractors love it for that very reason. They have managed to convince people that they should love it and they do. All the while it's an up sale and less work so in the end the contractor makes even more money and the customer is happy.
 
I've never been a fan of "popcorn" ceilings" they tend to shed sometimes in high humidity. Your base drywall had to be inflicted with some humidity itself. It is very subseptible to water or humidity during the process. Always done stompped ceilings.
Sorry to hear this. Ive seen the mess it can create.
 
The popcorn was over 20 years old. I said the heck with it, hired a crew, and an having knock-down ceilings put in as I type this (in the entire house).

New car,job,camera ,ceilings ...............may be a PITA but in the end your blessed with newer better things! :D
