Sealant options

Hey guys, fresh "detailer" here. Just purchased a ton of stuff to start getting the paint in order, mostly super mild correction, swirls are about the extent I'm going to tackle for our personal cars.

I'm equipped with a PC 7424XP, 105, 205, and Meguiar's 7006, 8006, 9006 pads.

I'm interested in some of the Poorboy's line for sealants, but I'm not sure which will be the best for my paint, and after the above purchases my wallet is a little light at the moment.

Can anyone recommend a good OTC sealant that will do the job for now, until I can order a bunch of Poorboy's to try out? Something from Mother's maybe? Meguiar's? I've got a $10 coupon to Pepboys I'd like to use.

I also have some Norton Liquid Ice wax, but I'm thinking it's a cleaner/polish, not LSP like I'm looking for.

TIA for the comments.

-Brad

NXT 2.0, Duragloss (which will be called polish, but is actually a sealant) or you could even go the route of Autoglym HD Wax.

I concur, NXT is not bad stuff for OTC its durability is decent, it will have the tendency to hide minor scratches

As for Poorboy's the sky is the limit
you have
EX-P..... is a pure sealant (my personal Favorite)
EX........ this is a sealant with Carnuba
PWS..... Polish with Sealant, this is the new kid on the block.
so as you can see there is just about something for every occasion.

Good luck and welcome to the world of detailing.

I'm surprised at all the NXT recommendations I assume that is because they have not tried much else OTC products.

While NXT looks nice Mother FX sywax looks as good and will far outlast NXT.

Duragloss has awesome gloss and will last ten times longer than NXT and cost only a third as much.
Check your local Car quest to see if they have Duragloss they should have it.

If you want to see what Duragloss looks like look at my Avatar

Thanks for the replies. I grabbed some nxt for $6 after my $10 reward coupon. I hope to try it out today if I can get some things done around the house.

I may try the duragloss sometime, your avatar is pretty revealing. Pepboys did have the mothers but after all the comments I figured I couldn't go wrong with NXT.

I hope to veer away from OTC altogether, just not feasible to do so right now.

I'm having trouble getting any on the car. I've already eaten at least half the bottle. Y'all didn't mention it smelled so good...

Just out of curiosity - why? There's lots of very good OTC products. Not everything has to cost $25 shipped and come from an online vendor to justify being a good product. Don't fall into that trap. Don't get me wrong - I love a lot of different vendors products, but really none of them are a necessity. I could do complete details using OTC stuff and no one other than me would ever know the difference.

Yes indeed. You just need to know which products are good. Too many people just buy the cheapest stuff on the shelf or do not know how to use it properly.

Well, don't get me wrong, I have an entire storage box (or two) full of OTC products that I use daily. Some of them are great. E.g. I really like the Blue Magic jet wet for tire shine. But some of the other products are a waste of my time. I've been much more successful in the past when buying things set up for the professional industry. I also hate paying shipping (enter amazon prime membership).

I won't argue that people most likely can't tell the difference between pro and OTC detail jobs, but heck, I'm only doing my own truck and my wife's Jeep...so if it makes the job easier by doing it's job better, or if I don't feel like I just got ripped off paying $20 because it says Mother's on it, then what does it matter at the end of the day?

I'm a complete advocate of having the right tools for the job. If you have to air up tires, do you pump them full with a bicycle pump, or do you go out and buy and air compressor, saving you time and then it's there the next time that you need it. At Pepboys there were I think 2 sealant options. NXT, and Mother's FX synwax or something...what if I had hated both options?

It's your money, and I definitely advocate supporting vendors who keep the site running. All I am saying is don't discount OTC products just because they're OTC products. There's lots of viable OTC products that work just as well as boutique products, and to write 'em off just because they're half the price and available locally is a mistake. It's also an attitude that seems to be pretty prevalent on detailing discussion forums.

My observation is that Meguiars and Mothers are major players in the professional detailing industry.

Almost all online vendors feature Meguiars and Mothers as high performers. That means the online vendors realize that these products fit well among their other offerings.

I was impatient and didn't want to wait for an online order to arrive so I detailed my new Ford Fusion with Mothers Reflection Wax, Topcoat and Reflections Tire dressing.

The results were a deep, wet, gloss shine, ultimate reflection and the flake popped like I had hoped for. The tires are a perfect satin sheen just how I like them. Unless my car can look better than it does, I don't see a need for another product until these are gone.

I was surprised to find them available through a local Amsoil Dealer.

I think you'd laugh at how many OTC products I actually do use. Shall I list them?

I think the whole point of this thread specifically is to find a decent OTC sealant, and I'm quite pleased with the NXT for that purpose. Except for the fact that it smells better than perfume.

Here's what the OTC Reflections Wax and Topcoat did for my 2010 Ford Fusion, dressed in Tuxedo Black Metallic. I'm very satisfied with the $46 investment.

Although I like both NXT and DG (DG I like better) they are more of an All-in-one product than a sealant. IMO they don't like to go over any other types of product and if they do they are probably taking most of that product off.

Looks nice. Reflections will make the Tuxedo Black Metallic pop. The flakes become a rainbow effect.

Here is an Tuxedo Black MKZ with just Reflections.

Bunky,

When I choose the car from the lot it was very dusty and I didn't notice the bling until they washed it and brought it to the delivery area.

It draws a lot of attention and comments at the office parking lot.

I am in the market for some wheels. The plastic wheel covers don't do justice to the car.
