Not a good week for indiana

...Despite a reasonable history of being a melting pot (tossed salad still in some areas) with tolerance to new comers we still go through spells where a vocal group can still unilaterally hate whole classes of people based upon religions, skin color, country, or political preferences.

My opinion is that there is a significant difference in the immigrants of today vs those when the nation was younger. In those days, it seems that the newcomers were more interested in integrating/assimilating themselves into the American society and culture. Learning and speaking the language for an example. Today they seem like they want to be the same, but separate. We are just a society of hyphenated Americans not just plain ol' Americans. There is less and less United States of America ... wait maybe that' not such a bad idea...signed Texan-American. ;)

Yes, Jay I would think that is pretty accurate. I am in no way "rich" , but the tax refunds or breaks have not really affected the way we live or save. We have a plan and stick with it, barring incidentals like kids braces, or glasses, etc..
I really have to thank Gearhead for some insight a few years ago that changed my savings perspective and my outlook on my mortgage. It really did work and I believe I am doing better after his advice :bigups

I hear you.

I have never felt that the administration (any administration) deserves very much blame or credit for the economy. With the possible exception of the Fed's influence, I think the state of the economy is more a function of the business cycle than politics.

Steve, I hope you're right, but I'm afraid that when we choose to retire, the tax status of capital gains will affect us personally. I wouldn't venture a guess as to the net worth of Poorboy's World; however, I suppose it's safe to say that you'd be considered "rich" in the tax year that you (or your kids) decide to sell out and retire.

I have a solution... flat tax.

retirement is not even a thought :lol2: I'm going down with the ship:passout: I don't live in the future so I just know what I am now and try to live that way ... Flat tax would be a great idea but try and get both sides to agree to that or anything :rofl

Isn't that the truth?! The only thing wrong with your statement is the LOL!

It's too painful to laugh...:lol2:

I guess it is true ..when you have kids as old as I was and am, there is no light at the end of the tunnel ... :(

You don't gotta tell me. I'm a white guy. Live in Alabama. Drive a 4x4. I'm automatically a racist. I do keep my hood ironed and pointy, though. :D

You may be a white 4x4 driving guy in Alabama, but the profit earned from the sale of your 4x4 went to Japan and you knew that when you bought it.... that makes you not a racist.

Unpatriotic, sure..... but not racist. :gotcha:

His 4x4 was built in San Antonio, so a good portion of the costs of that vehicle went to Americans who then spent that money in American restaurants, stores, etc. Would you rather the profits go to Detroit and the salaries go to a plant in Mexico or Canada?

It's another powder keg to sit on. Just like in NASCAR where the only manufacturer running a car actually built in America is the Japanese company Toyota.

So it didn't benefit the local car salesman, the staff of the local dealership, the manufacturing facility in Texas (including the various suppliers), and th eprofit went to a company who is actually investing in American manufactuirng?

Oh, I see - had I bought an "American" truck, it would have benefitted the plant in Mexico and the profit would have been used to pay off a government bailout loan or to be reinvested in Mexico- or most likely into the pockets of management everyone has complained about in these threads, right?

The American way, I suppose...

To make up for it, tonight I'll fly the American Flag (made in China, of course) at my house.

;) :D

I'm confused. Are my facts wrong? Or was this in reference to the post I was commenting on?

No. I was mocking those that think buying Toyota is a sin when in fact it is more american than my japanese based deisgn, mexico made Lincoln MKZ.

What makes for wierd discussion is that foreign manufacturers are building plants here in the US (all in the non-union south) yet Detroit has been moving mfg elsewhere or just importing cars in.

OK I said Id stay out of it, BUT. Heres what my mom used to recommend on taxes. Knock out ALL INCOME TAXES and placelike 5-7% sales tax on everything purchased to replace the income taxes. EVERYONE would then be paying their fair share. This would be on top of the state and local sales tax already in place. Only this 5-7% would be exempt to anyone or any business whether public or private. Example which would be a detail for the local sherriffs department at $150, which is presently tax excempt, x 7%= $10.50 that I send to the IRSs replacement. Hope thatr makes since.

The consumption based system is not new but if you eliminated income taxes but did not change govt spending then lower wage people (say $200k and under) would end up paying a lot more taxes. A national sales tax of 5% just would not get enough revenue.

Just throwing out numbers. didnt say it would work. but those wmoney would spend more on cars etc. liikei sad i dont bnow if it would work.
