Gunk Engine Brite Dressing

Beemerboy

Just One More Coat
The other day I stopped in a Kragens for some supplies...I saw that they had Gunk engine brite dressing in an aerosol can...I picked one up to try out...I used this on my Ford Ranger...once I had the engine real clean...sprayed it on...in the start it was very wet...Since I had a detail to get started and it was warm out...I closed up the hood...I came back to have a look 4 hours later and it was shiny, but still wet and some what oily feeling...The next day I took the truck out for a ride...and after about 20 minutes..I start to smell something burning:eek:

Pull over thinking that maybe I had got something wet that I shouldn't have...wrong...its the gunk spray on the manifold burning a little..so I figure that it would just burn off..I was right about that...The product had dried OK it was no longer oily feeling...very nice in the finish...the rubber wasn't as nice as I would have liked..seems the dressing didn't stick to it that well and wasn't as shiny as the rest of the metal parts...one thing that has really stood out was the smell of the product that still lingers today when the engine is hot..

My over all feeling is its not that great of a dressing..IMO..I'm not sure what I plan to do with the rest of the can...but its not going on any of mine or customers cars:D

I'm pretty sure the Gunk Engine Brite is a degreaser and is meant to be washed off with a hose after using it under the hood.

Charles

You are right they make a degreaser...I have that..and love the product on certain things....it smells to high heavens...

Here is the product that I used and it says that you can wash it off its a cleaner / degreaser and detailer spray...I've already washed most of it off...it was smelling to high heavens when the motor was hot...but I have one of the cleanest 87 Ford Ranger motors around!:D

A few excerpts from the Engine Brite info.
FUNCTION AND APPLICATION:
Removes grease and grime from auto, power mower, marine and tractor engines, metals, concrete and tires, industrial equipment where water is permitted

USE DIRECTIONS:
1) Engine must be off and cool.
2) Cover distributor, electronic components, carburetor, and air intake systems. Care must be taken with all underhood wiring and electronic sensors or components. Minimize rinse water that can cause performance problems.
Exposed electrical conductors (cracked or frayed wires or EC unit) can short circuit.
3) Spray generously on dry engine. Wipe any overspray from exterior body surfaces with a wet cloth at once to avoid dewaxing or streaking paint.
4) Allow ENGINE BRITE-ENGINE CLEANER to soak for 10 to 15 minutes (brush unusually heavy deposits).
5) Rinse with a fine stream of water from top
down.
SAFEGUARD OUR ENVIRONMENT...USE THE
MINIMUM AMOUNT OF WATER NECESSARY TO
REMOVE GRIME AND DIRT and see Disposal Statement
below.
6) When complete, remove all covers and replace any
removed parts. Start engine immediately and idle for 15 minutes to assure complete drying.

NOTE: Never start your engine after you have applied ENGINE BRITE-ENGINE CLEANER until entire engine is thoroughly rinsed.

I have used the product on extremely dirty engines, but that wouldn't include any of mine. :)
Two things kind of bothered me about the stuff.
1. The crap that was washed down the driveway and into the street and then into the storm sewer.
2. The smell! It had to be really bad since I rarely even notice the odor of a product.

I like the Gunk Engine Brite but after rinsing and drying I use a product called Car Brite Sheen.
Car Brite is made in Indianapolis,Indiana don't know if they are available in Arnold's Kingdom.

They have a truck that calls on all the body shops around here and I get mine off the truck but it outperforms anything that I have seen yet.
