Today is the last day to toss your hat in for a piece of the settlement in the class action against the credit reporting agency TransUnion. I assisted the law firm I worked at a couple years ago in building class action against them for entirely different reasons, and it is amazing how easy it is to nail them to the wall. Click here to register and pick your settlement option.
After you read the court document on that site you'll see that the class action is open to anyone who had an open credit card account with any line of credit between the dates of January 1, 1987 and May 28, 2008. That pretty much should include everybody I would think. TransUnion sold private consumer information to businesses without authorization. I would expect that is the story for every credit reporting agency because I don't recall ever giving them permission to sell my information, but for now the buck stops with TransUnion. They are just so easy to pick on...
The settlement details are a little vague as far as any dollar amount, but basically you get one of three choices.
1) free credit report monitoring for six months, plus cash if there's any money left over in settlement fund and you still get to sue them if you want
2) all the benefits of option one but you can't sue them any further.
3) 9 months of credit monitoring, access to some free credit scores, and free use of TransUnion's mortgage simulator service - but no cash payment
So useless benefit 1, 2, or 3 are your choices.
There is another option on the site that allows you to just hold out for any amount of the cash settlement, but that is likely to be $.12 per person. On the chance that it is enough for a meal at Taco Bell, that is the one I opted for.
Today (September 24) is the last day that you can sign on the dotted line for the settlement, so if you are at all miffed that TU was profiting from selling your name, address, SSN, credit history, and anything else they decided to make money on, then here is your chance to get on the bandwagon.
